It's a pity that I have no possibility on my cable TV to watch World Cup football matches in other languages. I would like to do this to aquire a specialized football vocabulary in the other 6 languages I speak. What helped me a bit was watching two footballmatches on German TV together with my Dutch friend, so I could directly ask him about specific football jargon in Dutch, which was used in German during the match.

For commentating excitement level I love, in this order: Spanish (preferably Argentine), Arabic and French. I love it when they go hysterical hehehehe :)
According to this I should watch more in Portuguese and Dutch too :)
Funny commentaries with Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic and English
Thanks to living in Switzerland I get to choose between German (Germany), German (Switz), French and Italian. I switched around quite a bit at the start of the world cup but out of those four I eventually settled on French because I think they get the most worked up <3 That's what I love!
Anyway... back to my corner to cry about Argentina getting eliminated... ^_~

It may yet be Holland v. Germany in the final.
Would you watch THAT with your Dutch friend..? :-0

British English suits the game well, at least the northern accents. But I can't imagine a commentator speaking with a "posh" southern accent. That would be outright hilarious. |

This is absolutely true. It perhaps also reflects a rather interesting point: in England (unlike in most other European countries) football is still predominantly a working class game.
Of course, some things have changed over the last 20 years or so, and English football no longer has a "rough" or "hooligan" image. But in England it is still mostly people from a certain side of the social scale who get really seriously excited about football, I think.
It goes for the players too. Is there a single member of the English team - even one - who doesn't come from a relatively poor and underprivileged background?
By contrast players in the English Cricket and Rugby teams have tended to be middle class privately and university educated types. (Before the days when Rugby Union was fully professional, this was even more the case...)

(BTW I'm not suggesting that the Rugby or Cricket teams are any more successful than the football team...)

Such a WK final would be very realistic. Unfortunately he will not be available then.Like so often we would watch it both and then - per telephone - discuss the developments of the match in the 15 - minutes pause and - of course - after the match.
I like the Dutch football team very much, so I won't be unhappy, if they win the title. As a souvenir he bought an "oranje vuvuzela" for me, which isn't on sale here in Germany.

This goes for Dutch football as well. Of course pretty much the entire country supports the team but the people who sleep in their orange pyjama's and wrap their houses in orange toilet paper are mostly working class. The lower-class neighbourhood near my home in Amsterdam has been a sea of orange for months while my upper middle class neighbourhood in my hometown only has a couple of little bits of decoration.
Fasulye, I hope the final will be between Holland and Germany. A world cup final between two such rivals, can it get any more exciting? ;-)

I'm rooting for the Germany team all the way. Many predict Spain to win. But I think it
will be Germany that pulls on top. But, no doubt the Germany vs Spain will be good.
Netherlands will win hands down.
