I know some languages consider short e (bed) and short a (bad) to be the same sound. I think they're different, but that's because I grew up speaking English.
I can see how short e, short a, and short u (about, but) are similar and could be hard to distinguish for speakers of a language that doesn't distinguish, as they're all made with the same mouth position. Kind of like how some people who learn English cannot tell the difference between short i (slip) and long E (sleep). I know Koreans think their three K's are very different, but my ears just don't hear it. I've also been told that none of them is exactly an English K, which means someone who wants to speak English and Korean needs to know how to correctly pronounce four different K sounds. 1 person has voted this message useful |
