I'm not an Italian learner and don't know any Italian, but with the holidays coming up,
I want to find some Christmas presents in Italian for my mother, who is learning it. She's 60 years old, stuck at home with a broken leg, and is at a pre-intermediate level of Italian, but really keen to learn and get into native materials in a big way, especially while she can't do much else with her time! Ideally, I'm hoping someone could tell me about some Italian TV shows that are available buy on DVD, and maybe even some native books (children's books, or low level adult books) to give as gifts. She's already a huge fan of Inspector Montalbano! An interesting book that may interest your mother is 'Che Storia' it is a brief history of Italy recalled in a simple and clear manner. The publisher is 'Bonacci'. Montalbano is good but they use a Sicilian accent so if your mother isn't bothered by regional accents you could look at two new films: 'Benvenuti al Sud' and 'Benvenuti al Nord'. If she gets a laugh at stupid comedy any film made by Aldo, Giovanni & Giacomo could be worth a look at and then you have older films like 'Pane e Tulipani', 'Cinema Paradiso', 'Il Mio Migliore Nemico' or even much older like 'Ladri di Biciclette'.

She might also enjoy the immensely popular comedy show Zelig that is available on DVD. ;) If she is more into old films from the 50s, I definitely recommend all the Don Camillo films!

One bit of literature I can recommend is Italo Calvino's Fiabe Italiane. It's a
collection of fairy tales from all over Italy, written in pretty accessible Italian. Calvino spent time collecting these, then translating many from regional dialects into standard Italian. Many cultures have some sort of "gold standard" for their collective folktales. This is it for Italy. I have the three volume set. It makes a nice keepsake, but I still go back and occasionally read it sometimes. R. == 1 person has voted this message useful |
