When I'm studying French, I know which online dictionaries to use for which kinds of tasks—Wiktionary is an excellent monolingual dictionary for example, WordReference is good if I need an English translation, and Linguee is good for puzzling out weird turns of phrase.
But I don't know what online dictionaries work well for Spanish. So I'd like to pick everybody's brains a bit:
1. What's your favorite online Spanish->English dictionary? Is WordReference good?
2. What's your favorite online monolingual Spanish dictionary?
3. Is Linguee's English<->Spanish site any good?
4. Are there any other dictionary sites you use on a regular basis?
Thank you very much for your suggestions!
(I'm curious because I'm working on some SRS-related tools, and I want to support Spanish out of the box. Also, one of these days, I'm probably going to start poking at Spanish a bit. The Assimil course is sitting on the shelf, taunting me.)

I'd been going to suggest Wordreference, but I see that's on your radar. I used to use it
a lot when I was active in Spanish, including the forums.
I don't know if there are any better ones.

Hi, Emk.
1) Actually, my favourite EN-ES dictionary is WordReference.com. You can choose between
their own dictionary or Collins in that site. The forums are also very good.
2) rae.es. That's the official Spanish dictionary, made by the
Real Academia Española, the organization that regulates the language.
3) I love Linguee in Spanish! :P It displays many accurate results almost always.
Good luck!

A little question: how old is that Assimil book? I'm asking it because Spanish spelling
rules have changed a bit in recent years, and maybe you'll have to pay attention to that.
I'm currently learning German using an Assimil course from the 90's, but there was a
spelling reform later and I had to "relearn" some words.

In addition to the sites already mentioned, you can also check out:
PONS Spanish-English Dictionary (requires Adblock Plus or similar ad blocker)
Collins Spanish-English Dictionary (ad blocker strongly recommended, but not necessary)

Diccionario integral del español de la Argentina (2009)>
http://www.clarin.com/diccionario
Diccionario del español de México (2005)>
http://dem.colmex.mx/
These two give a more accurate picture of Argentine Spanish and Mexican Spanish
than the Madrid-made RAE dictionary.
