jeff_lindqvist - I like the poem! Definitely had to look up geuzenlied too - Bab.la didn't even have "geus". :-)
Found this explanation, for anyone who's lazy like me and doesn't want to look it up:
Quote:
Geuzenliederen gingen vaak over belangrijke
|
|
And Wikipedia says de geuzen were Calvinist Dutch nobles.
VivianJ5 - I'm sorry to hear that, but it has been absolutely fantastic having you on the team these past few months. You are always welcome here. I wish you best of luck with your French and Italian studies, and I'll definitely be following your continuing language adventures. :-)
About starting a new log - my suggestion is that, if you like everything in one place like me, you just change your thread title and put a note in your first post.
Do you know where you'll move next?
Team Skype
Sorry, life got in the way and I lost track of this thread. :-)
I think the best day was this Sunday, March 2, no? People still in?

The song of spring is in the air! March's challenge is to share a favorite Dutch song with the team and translate as much of the lyrics as you can. Music is something that can be enjoyed by both beginners and advanced learners alike, so I hope this will be a fun challenge for everyone.
(Sorry this is late! It's been a hectic weekend.)

I couldn't resist, I just have to let some others out there know, some other Dutch enthusiasts. I'm back learning Dutch!!
Okay so French is my main target at least for now, but I'll be aiming to do an hour a day of Dutch from here on, whilst doing at least that in French and then some.
My Dutch studies will involve many months of simply reviewing old material (courses) that i've used before to simply bring all that old material back to the forefront of my mind. So, this won't be difficult at all, and this way it won't necessarily interfere too much with my French studies by draining too much of my brain's vital energy reserves. As my French improves further I'll seek to step it up a little further with Dutch in the not too distant future hopefully.
Hope everyone is going well out there with their Dutch adventures!

Great to see another person on the Dutch bandwagon! Great stuff Peter. Hoe gaat het tot nu toe?
March Challenge:
gehad, ga het liedje even luisteren, erg mooi.
niemand is hier dakloos hoor
niemand heeft iets gedaan
misdaan
niemand heeft een misdaad begaan
we zijn er niet aan onderdoor gegaan
nee
we’re going ahead
no one noticed anything
and nothing’s really going on
I don’t think it’s important??
I didn’t notice anything about it
I’ve forgotten how we went
I’ve forgotten how it went
I wanted to know where we were
and
I wanted to know how it...??? us
there is a sun nearby that goes past above us
there is a moon nearby under which we go through life
we’re going ahead
no one is homeless here
noone’s done anything
done anything wrong
noone’s commited a crime
we’re not about that?? gone underneath
no
I wanted to know how it... us
There is a sun nearby that goes by above us
there is a moon nearby under which we go through life

Hey everyone,
Just a quick question. Can I join this team? I'm already on French deuxieme, but having reintroduced Dutch study as well now, I want to know if I can join your team too? If for some reason I can't i'd be happy to continue as an observer of sorts :)

Vos: Going well tnx Vos :) How's your learning going?

Hi PeterMollenburg,
Certainly! I've gone ahead and added you to the member list. Your name links to your
French log, but if you want it to link somewhere else just let me know.
Vos - What a frickin' beautiful song. Reading the lyrics all together like that makes me
appreciate the song 1000x more. Pure beauty. :-)

Peter, Deuxième fellow - welcome to Team Oranje!
Oh my, only two hours left to complete the March challenge (at least in my time zone)?
I just was about to write: "I don't know any Dutch songs", but then I remembered a song text I learned ages ago in Dutch lessons:
Hendrik Haan uit Koog aan de Zaan
The Youtube link will show you a version with lyrics, so I won't copy it here, but summarize my personal 'Best of'....
The song itself might be a bit frumpy, but I had a good laugh and have been remembering part of the text for more than a decade now.
Its key message is:
Hendrik Haan uit Koog aan de Zaan heeft de kraan open laten staan.
(Hendrik Haan from Koog aan de Zaan forgot to close the water tap.)
This message is forwarded from person to person (and if I remember Dutch lessons well, each strophe is sung in a different Dutch dialect), and with every repetition, the story gets worse and worse...While the first version was like:
Uren, uren stond 'ie open. Heel de keuken is onder gelopen.
(It was open for hours, flooding the whole kitchen.)
It finally gets:
Zeven maanden stond 'ie open. Heel de stad is onder gelopen. Denkt U toch eens even: Niemand meer in leven - allemal verzopen
(It was open for seven months, flooding the whole city. Just imagine: Noone alive anymore, all drowned.)
But then they meet Hendrik Haan in person, and he tells the true story:
De keukenmat een tikkie nat
(The kitchen rug was a bit wet.)
Hekje, thanks for this challenge! It made me remember this fun piece!
