There's a reasonably functional online dictionary at Lernu. The best online dictonary is the reta vortaro (literally internet dictionary)

I like the approach Zamenhof took in his first book: to teach the grammar by examples.
If you use Mozilla/Firefox, go to Memoru
(you may skip the first four lessons, or go through them very quickly).
