Affixes are one of the most fun parts about Esperanto. However, since this is the feature of an agglutinative language, it also takes some getting used to - and it's important to get used to it, to be able to intuitively understand ad-hoc composites in an Esperanto conversation or reading, because 'good language' is measured by how well you use a limited vocabulary, NOT how many advanced words you know.

So if you'd like to learn about this system or practise, even if you don't actually study Esperanto, follow this thread as I'm going to slowly introduce all affixes along with some opportunities to practise.

(Do not scroll down beyond any one part before you're done, as people might be posting their solutions to the exercises)

PART 1 - really basic affixes

-o for nouns, e. g. "knabo"(boy)
-a for adjectives (describing how things are), e. g. "bela"(beautiful)
-e for adverbs (describing how an action is done), e. g. "bele"(in a beautiful way)
-i for verbs (infinitive), e. g. "bani"(bathe)
-eg- for "big" / makes the meaning stronger, e. g. "knabego"(big boy)
-ej- for a place, e. g. "banejo"(bathroom) is the place where you "bani"

Try to find an English translation for the following words:
peto, amika, beli, ripeto, nei, nuno, nuna, petego, facilega, kursejo

Using the above affixes, translate the following words into Esperanto:
to thank, the leavetaking, linguistic (relating to language), school, downpour (heavy rain), duty (based on 'must'), bedroom, "great!"

The vocabulary necessary for these is quite basic, but I'm posting this in case people not learning Esperanto want to approach this as a puzzle:
adiau - bye
amiko - friend
bela - beautiful
bona - good
dankon - thanks
devi - must
dormi - to sleep
facila - easy
kurso - course
lerni - learn
lingvo - language
ne - no
nun - now
peti - to request
pluvi - to rain
ripeti - to repeat
