Hey Everyone,
I have decided to seriously take up Italian. This will be my place to write about interesting things I encounter, walls, milestones, and problems that I encounter or find a way around. I'm very excited to explore the language of Italian and hope to achieve fluency within a year. I'll most likely be studying for about an hour every day, but this could turn into more or less depending on my time constraints(especially when school starts back up again.
Materials I will be using(as of now):
Headstart(FSI)- I've heard that FSI's programs are very boring, but also very thorough. I am glad to say that I started this course last night and to my surprise it was NOT BORING! It was actually quite interesting. This course seems familiar to Assimil(which I will also be purchasing)
Assimil Italian with ease- This course will be my main course once I can find time to order it from amazon. Hopefully I will acquire this soon and can get started on it.
Assimil Italian without toil- I'm also trying the older version too.
Well this is all for now. Hopefully I will have something to write about soon
Arrivederci,
Seth
PS. If anyone has suggestions for learning materials it would be greatly appreciated.

My first night with Assimil Italian without toil was quite... interesting. I found it a little hard to follow in the beginning, but maybe that's because it almost seems too easy. I've logged 3 hours and 15 minutes so far which most of the time is made up of the Headstart course. Favorite phrase: Parla Italiano(basically because it's so simple) and from assimil: Si, per amore o per forza(another fun easy one) I'm also having a great time with the trilled r's.
I'm not sure if I'm moving too fast for assimil, with headstart I covered about a unit per night, with assimil I'm already at lesson 8(completed 7) in about an hour. Now this seems extremely fast, but I guess we'll see
Arrivederci,
Seth

Finally purchased Assimil Italian with ease and a friend loaned me Michael Thomas. Looks like I have all the tools to become successful in this language=)

Good luck with your Italian studies! If you need any help, I’m sure on this forum you’ll find native speakers—me included—ready to lend a hand.

I’m not very qualified to comment on the FSI courses as I’ve never used one from beginning to end (I’ve just dabbled with them for a couple of lessons in a couple of languages), but as far as I’ve understood, it’s the Basic Course (like French Basic and Spanish Basic) that’s boring but thorough. The Headstart seems to be much lighter and faster.
I’m happy to see your main resource will be Assimil: I’m sure the language will be more modern than the FSI and it seems that many forum members really enjoy the method. I’m personally working through French With Ease and it’s going well so far.

Some weeks ago I posted some links on the Links & Internet Resources subforum.

In case you’re not aware of their existence, there are a couple of free video courses online. You might want to have a look to see if you find them interesting.
PS. Remember to remove the blanks (if any) from the above link in order for it to work.

Thanks for the video courses. I'm also very happy that I'm using assimil. Headstart focuses on numbers and almost military like communication, plus it takes about an hour to complete a unit. Assimil is much quicker and it's interesting also. From what I've heard Assimil creates some of the best courses and hopefully this isnt different for me.

Hey everyone. I´m noticing progress in Italian speaking. I only know some key phrases, so I can communicate with my Italian neighbors. The other day I was watching TV(TV a Italiano) with my neighbors (Francesco and Salvatore) and I could just pick out words that I knew and some of it sounded familiar. So far this is a wonderful learning experience and I´m enjoying myself very much (it also helps that Italians are so encouraging, they always tell me how well I´m doing)

Buon Giorno! My Italian is coming along quite well and I am really having a great time. Sorry to everyone that this logbook isn't very interesting. So far I have recorded a little over 20 hours and I like the pace I'm learning at( although it may not be fast enough for some of you)
Ciao,
Seth
