Chapter 4 of my Dutch lesson is to me, kinda difficult...as I have always been weak with words/vocab associated with food, regardless of whichever language that is :( Maybe that explains the reason why I am rather thin....Anyway, I guess I will quickly go through this chapter and move on to the next, which deals with directions.
Dutch New words that I learnt during my train ride this morning: Zegt u het maar --- was soll es sein? Mag ik...? --- ich hätte gerne... Anders nog iets? --- Sonst noch etwas? Dat was het. At long last, I reached the last page of the 471 page-novel "Chi to Hone" (btw, it means Blood and Bones in Japanese), and I seem to be having some kinda 'hangover'...some books seem to have such a lingering effect on you even though you finished the book awhile ago...I would strongly recommend this novel, which comes in 2 volumes, to anyone who can read Japanese. Though I must say that, the language used by Yang Sogil could be rather strong, compared to say, Haruki Murakami's style of writing.
Upon reaching the end of the story, I even went to search for more information regarding this novel, and voila, I found it on wikipedia, and it seems that it's based on a true lifestory - the son of the protagonist is the author who penned this book. http://www.midnighteye.com/reviews/bloodandbones.shtml Edited by noriyuki_nomura on 05 January 2011 at 8:34am 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I will be updating my log soon, but I'm wanting to make more progress in studying before I lose myself in HTLAL posts. Briefly, in response to your earlier question about the library here in Amsterdam, they do not have either Lextra and Langenscheidts courses. They have many many others, tho! Last weekend, I met up with a French friend who's working and living in Luxembourg, and I must say that, I am touched and happy that she came to visit me. We spent the whole afternoon (in Basel) catching up with each other, and hence, I had the opportunity to speak French for the entire Saturday afternoon. U know, it's always touching and interesting to know/meet nice people especially in your overseas working experience.
Italian And ever since I finished the Japanese novel last week, I had this empty feeling, which was really weird...perhaps the story really affected me alot...hence, I began the Il bambino senza nome - Mark Kurzem. As of this morning, I reached page 78, and it has been interesting so far - about a jewish boy (of 5 or 6 years old) who was caught by a group of Nazi soldiers, and owing to the 'help' of one of the Nazi soldiers who had pity on the boy, advised him to disguise himself as a non-jewish Latvian in order to avoid being killed. Ho imparato tantissime parole nelle prime 78 pagine da questo romanzo che mi ha letteralmente ammaliato con la storia cosi incoinvolgente! Inoltre ho letto su Wikipedia che il scrittore (Mark Kurzem) e gia mancato nel 2009 mentre che suo padre (il protagonista nella storia) viva ancora in Australia. Dutch I proceeded to chapter 5 - on directions. Korean I did so far 200 Anki cards..but will constantly do revision with these. I have been travelling the past few days, and one of my favourite weekend activities is to take the train and just travel to somewhere, and last weekend, I went to Gstaad
- a charming Swiss town with probably the highest density of international rich superstars concentrated in the whole of Switzerland. And in the crowded train on my way back from Gstaad to Zurich, an elderly lady offered her window seat to me (thinking that I am a tourist, well, in a way, I am a tourist in this beautiful country) so that I could have a better view of the passing scenary while she sat beside the aisle. Though simple, but to me, it is such a touching and kind gesture from the elderly lady. Anyway, my progress is as follows: German Um mich fruehzeitig auf das Sprachdiplom vorzubereiten habe ich vor ein paar Tagen mit dem Buch "Damit Deutschland wieder in Fahrt kommt" vom Autor, Wolfgang Clement - ein gelernter Jurist und Journalist, der als Minister unter ex-Kanzler Gerhard Schroeder weitreichende Arbeitsmarktreformen auf den Weg brachte, angefangen. Ich habe auch mit dem "�bungsgrammatik f�r Fortgestrittene" wieder angefangen zu arbeiten, sodass ich mit der Grammatik besser vertraut sein kann. Dutch I am done with 8 chapters, which means, half of the Dutch textbook is done, yippee! However, I still can't really speak the language :( Nevertheless, it's enjoyable to listen to the Dutch dialogues from the CDs...I will do revision for the 8 chapters before moving on to a new chapter. In my mailbox today, I received a letter stating that I passed the DELE B2 exam which I took in August 2010 (though I already knew that I passed the exam according to the Website of Cervantes Institute some when in early October last year). What surprised me is that it took them 5 months to send exam notifications (and not the certificates yet) to those who have passed (or failed for that matter) the DELE exam. Guess, it'll take some more months before the certificate finally arrives....

I came across some information on the internet that the University of Zurich is an exam centre of the CNaVT exams in Switzerland. And in order to give my Dutch studies a more structured plan to proceed with the language, I am contemplating to aim for the A2 / B1 level of the exam in May this year.
So far, I have nicely moved on to chapter 12 of the Lextra Niederlandisch Kursbuch, and once I am done with this, I will move on to the Langenscheidts Niederl�ndisch, which seems to bring its 'students' to the B1 level.
