French: 1hr (Michel Thomas Advanced Course - perfect tense) German: none Enjoyed family events for New Years Day, swimming at the beach and the our magnificent sunshine here in Lake Macquarie, and still managed to start the year off with some French. French: 2hrs 15mins (MT Advanced Course, Hugo's French in 3 Months, vocab [+53]) German: 3hrs 40mins (Fit fuers Zertifikat Deutsch, em neu 2008 Kursbuch, vocab [+57]) Starting to prepare for the Zertifikat Deutsch (B1 German exam at the Goethe Institut). Built a new set of Leitner boxes a few days ago, to replace my old plywood boxes. Working well and looking good. Hi Lee,
I'd love to be able to, but working full-time and my family commitments don't allow it. Ideally, I like to study 2 or 4 hours a day during the week, and then on weekend days, it depends. Some days might be full of parties, sport and family gatherings, so no study will be done. Other days may be totally free, and I could do up to 10 hours. Every now and again I have a day off, when I feel like things aren't going in. To be honest, I don't find it difficult at all to study for so long - I don't have a television or computer in my apartment, so I have no real distractions and it's easy to get into a time warp and make good progress. I always study in 20 minute blocks, which are timed with an alarm clock that's set at the start of each block. The blocks alternate between French and German, and between vocabulary using the Leitner boxes, working with textbooks, and working with native materials. When I finish a block, I record it in my logbook - the date, the start time, the end time, the duration, the language, and what was accomplished. It's taken me a long time and a lot of experimentation, to find this approach that works the best for me - the changes after 20 minutes keep things fresh, I don't lose focus, and knowing that I only have 20 minutes to get something done makes me a lot more productive than if I had double the time to do it.
