It was a heavy work-weekend and it's left me a bit exhausted.

I've read 3 articles in DasZEIT magazine online and copied all useful words into my notebook. At first I thought I would make index cards of all the words and phrases, but I've been amassing so many cards (I write a lot down in my notebook) that it's taking too long review them, so I've decided to just review out of my notebook.

I started reading the preface for Die Rote Erzherzogin

It was another heavy workweek. Last night I just came home, brushed my 4-yr-old's teeth and read her a book and went to bed. I tried to read mine but I fell asleep. Today I worked until 2:00, then at 2:30 I drove my 10-yr-old to a birthday party, came home and read a little French.

I climbed into the bath this evening and read two chapters of Die rote Erzherzogin. It's not a preferred choice -- none of the books are. I showed the booklist to my husband after he expressed sympathy with my having to read two of the other books (Clement and Schäuble's economic forcasts): you have to read THAT? Then he saw what my other choices were. There's not much by way of entertainment there...

I'm trying to get into it. I haven't gotten very far.

I find amazing that you dedicate so much to German, especially with your family all around!! ... when will you sit for the examination btw?

As for the requested essays, it looks like C2 is a university degree equivalent or am I wrong? I mean, it looks pretty hard and as hard as if you had to write it in English...

Keep up with the good job !!

Hi polyglossia! (I keep thinking that I'll soon be at the point where I'll be able to answer in French -- I'm not quite there yet)

Thank you, and yes, I'm working toward the GDS (Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom)-- it's quite a challenge, as I'm discovering. (I must be crazy!) It's rated as being above C2 -- C+ or "D".

Unfortunately the GDS will be administered for the last time in November. I can ONLY take it this coming November and after than I can take (the failed) parts in May -- but I won't be able to take the whole test. After May 2012 it will no longer be administered. It's being replaced by a new C2 test.

I do some translation work sometimes, and if I ever wanted to become certified, my state (Hessen) would require me (a non-German speaker) to have the GDS. It's a bit messed-up. The state says I need the GDS but the test is being abolished (Qu'est-ce que c'est bureaucratie!) Even if I don't manage a state-certification I'd like to do this exam. It's the ultimate test for German, aside from studying Germanistik at a university.

(FYI, for anyone who's interested, the KDS and the ZOP also won't be administered after Jan. 2012. THey're being replaced by a new C2 test.)

Speaking of translation, I still have an e-mail to write De-Eng for Mr. S. (Man, I almost forgot!) I'd better go do that..

Today I did some grammar work out of the Hueber book (just some Starke/Schwache Verben)

I can't believe it but someone at Lang-8 actually gave me a correction to my incredibly boring summary of Wolfgang Schäuble's book! I worked in the corrections and I wrote another Gliederung to another Thema: I found a Modellsatz and I'm practicing the Gliederung to see if I can make it under the time-limit of 20 min. I submitted that to Lang-8 as well.

I'd better go, someone's calling me...

Oh, well a Gliederung is actually just the outline. (I've been practicing.) For the test we have 10 minutes to pick a theme and analyse it. Then 20 min to make an outline, 170 to write the actual essay and 10 min to count the words. I'm having trouble writing within the time-limit..

Exampe theme:

"Es heißt, dass der Mensch an seinen Aufgaben wächst, also durch Anforderungen und Probleme Stärke und Kompetenz gewinnt. Wann ist das Ihrer Meinung nach der Fall, wann nicht? Führen Sie in Ihrer Argumentation auch Beispiele an."

Here's the Gliederung that I sent to Lang-8:

Einleitung:

Der Mensch wächst an seinen Aufgaben, aber nur unter Umständen.

A. Wir wachsen nicht
   1) alles bleibt beim alten
   2) keine Herausforderung
   3) Bequemlichkeit
   4) Beispiel:
      -Scheidungsfamilie
      -unversierte Familie

B. Wir wachsen über uns hinaus
   1) Gemeinsames Unglück
   2) Zusammenhalt
   3) Faktor Zeit
   4) Überwindung
   5) Beispiel:
      -Japans Atomkrise
      -gemeinsame Stärke

C. Wachstum nach einem Tiefpunkt
   1) das Scheitern
   2) Belastung
   3) Unterstützung
   4) persönliches Wachstum
   5) Beispiel:
      physische Erkrankung

Schluss:

-Thomas Edisons Angst vorm Dunkeln
-Nur aus Not erfinderisch

The purpose of the outline is to organize thoughts before the actual writing begins. The thing is, we don't have time to do a rough draft. The essay has to be written within 170 minutes and it has to be perfect. The Gliederung is supposed to help with focus.

I have a problem writing around the theme (Themaverfehlung). My tutor says that my outlines are also too "wordy"/textreich. I just start thinking of examples and things that aren't necessarily topic of the essay. I waste time writing about it. For example, I don't know if Thomas Edison has anything to do with a person being able to grow and overcome obstacles -- but I'm gonna try it.

EDIT: I don't know if anyone here has ever had the same problem writing essays/Aufsätze, but if you have any suggestions -- I'm open to hear them!

EDIT2: You know what, I'm gonna rewrite this outline. It's going in all sorts of different directions. I'd better pare it down. Next stop, Lang-8 for Gliederung #2!
