Here's the comments from my tutor when I gave him a revised Gliederung for ÜE6:

I have six themes that I can work with out of an old Modellsatz from the Goethe Institute. I'm gonna work every day until I'm successful in weeding out any and all extraneous, off-topic material which could lead to lost points on an essay. In addition to that,

1. I'm gonna sit in the bath and read that book, Die rote Erzherzogin

2. From the Heuber book -- lots and lots of grammar: "trennbare und zusammengesetzte Verben"

That's the plan for the next two weeks. Oh yeah, and I'd better think about writing the essay for Übungseinheit 7 (*grumble/grognons*)

I've just read through your log and I've found it very informative. I've done the C2 ZOP and would have loved to do the GDS in a few years if it weren't being replaced!

It seems like you are working hard to prepare for this exam so keep the good work up!

alys.d'orival, I appreciate you taking the time to read my log! I can be pretty long-winded at times! ;)

I read a good portion of Die rote Erzherzogin and I gotta say it's really sad. The critics are correct when they say they could never make a movie of this woman's life; no one would ever believe it! Truth is stranger than fiction, indeed.

This woman was the only daughter of the crown prince Rudolph, heir to an imperial monarchy (Hapsburg-Lothringen) of more than 50 million subjects and she had to celebrate her 70th birthday in a delapitated, war-torn two-bedroom apartment that was so damp that the walls "dripped". I haven't read about her life as a sozialist yet. I just finished with Rudolph's suicide and Sissi's assasination. Fun stuff.. I'll try to pick up where I left off tonight.

I'm working on French as we speak...

I've gotten a response from someone kind enough at Lang-8 to check the Gliederung I did yesterday (a new one). The comments were very useful. All I need to do is watch the grammatical errors.

Speaking of grammar,

I've been working on trennbare/untrennbare Verben (Heuber book). Some of the ones I've missed are

bevormunden (bevormundet, untrennbar)
überhaben (übergehabt, trennbar)
überarbeiten (überarbeitet, untrennbar)
durchgreifen (durchgegriffen, trennbar)
überleiten (übergeleitet, trennbar)
unterordnen (untergeordnet, trennbar)

"unterordnen" and "durchgreifen" I've seen as past participles before. I guess they looked strange to me as infinitives in a sentence -- I couldn't figure out if I should separate them or not. "Er griff durch" was also a Stolperstein. I'll repeat the excercise later on.

I plan to do lessons 13-25 up to Easter weekend. (no plans but to stay at home.)

I'm still working on the grammar. I should finish the section by the weekend. Some recent mistakes,

unterschreiben - untrennbar
übersiedeln - (both) trennbar, untrennbar
unterwerfen - untrennbar
unterbleiben - untrennbar

(I have to remember "unterschrieben". so that's the reason I'm logging in my mistakes.)

There's some words that I thought fell unter the category of untrennbar because "kreis-bogenförmige Bewegung", but NOT

Erde umgraben (to turn over earth)
eine Person umrennen (doesn't mean to run around them - *rot*)
die Hosentaschen umstülpen (to turn inside-out)

I'm currently going over some articles from DASZEIT online. One of the suggestions from the Goethe Institute is to make a list of all the words that fall under a specific categorie (either Gesellschaft, Kultur, Technik, Freizeit, Politik/Wirtschaft) Today I'm working on categories for Schule and Wirtschaft.

Some great words that I'm just now looking up:

sich abschotten - isolate oneself
verspielen - squander
Bildungslandschaft - educational infrastructure
Bildungsarmut - no equivalent found. "educational poverty", I guess
regieren - reign

I'm feeling such a strong need to increase my vocabulary. Everywhere I look tells me, "you should know that." My experience says that writing is a sure-fire method. I'd like to write another essay using the last outline/Gliederung I wrote for lang-8. The problem is, the subject doesn't excite me. I could go ahead and write my essay for ÜE7, which is the outline I had corrected twice by my tutor, Dr. Schütze...

but tonight..

my husband just broke open a bottle of champagne. All the neighbors outside are celebrating the 4-day Easter-weekend (and the unusually perfect weather). I think I'll procrastinate a little bit longer..

In any case I have the outline all ready to go.

I'm going full-force with the grammar. I'm doing the section for "Passiv". My goal is three pages a day.

It's not easy to figure out which part of the sentence (Satzteil) should be emphasized. German is so interchangeable, but there are times when one part is more important.

I wrote: In zügigem Tempo wird mehrere Stunden gewandert.
RICHTIG: Mehrere Stunden wird in zügigem Tempo gewandert.

Now, for some reason that sounds better. If "in zügigem Tempo" were to be in the first position, then mehrere Stunden wouldn't be that important. It'd be more like. "In zügigem Temp wird gewandert." (don't mind me... just analysing mistakes here..)

I wrote: Es wird immer wieder einmal zwischendurch gerastet.
RICHTIG: Zwischendurch wird immer wieder einmal gerastet.

That is an example of one of those where I'm supposed to do without the "ES". This kind of excercise is actually kind of fun. The trick is to get rid of the "ES". Some more wrong answers:

I wrote: Es wurden Angriffe auf Passanten beobachtet.
RICHTIG: Angriffe wurden auf Passanten beobachtet.

I wrote: Es wurden Autos hemmungslos beschädigt.
RICHTIG: Hemmungslos wurden Autos beschädigt.

Logging in my mistakes seems to work well as a review. I come in and read my previous posts and it works as a Wiederholung.

I have a really good one today. I'm working on Zustands- and Vorgangspassiv. I thought I had a handle on it until I came across this text. Here I was supposed to fill in the proper verb, that is, decide whether it should be Zustands- oder Vorgangspassiv. The first half were wrong, then I got better. Here it is. Anyone can try it. The answers are at the bottom..
