Hey,
I'm currently living in Bogotá, after having spent some time in México. I like Latin America but have recently been thinking of trying something different. Portuguese would be once option, but then I read a bit about Paraguay and learned something I never knew before. 90% of the population of Parguay speaks Guaraní, making it (I believe) the only country in the Americas to have maintained an indigenous language in such large proportions. It would be fascinating to live in a society where almost everyone is bilingual in Spanish and Guaraní, especially since this seems to be a rare case where white people have adopted an indigenous language in large parts. I realize this is a few months late, but just in case...
Yes, I lived in Paraguay for two years. I speak both Spanish and Guarani. It's a beautiful language, and is very much NOT a romance language (it is indeed indigenous). I lots of interesting things to share about it, though I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for. As for resources, I bought a fairly large Guarani-Spanish dictionary while I was in Paraguay, but you may not find as much online to help you learn it as with other popular languages. I am friends with a Paraguayan family, and I must say I have always been impressed with
the Guarani language. I have always been on the lookout for a good Guarani learning website, although so far I haven't been able to find anything satisfactory. There aren't any books that I know of that have anything to do with learning or understanding Guarani, but I would be interested in knowing whether TrentBooks knows of any place I can obtain a copy of his dictionary without actually going to Paraguay. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I haven't been able to find anything near what I purchased in Paraguay (it's a big dictionary), but there are a few resources on Amazon that might be helpful. The dictionary I purchased was (I believe) called "Avane'e" (or "Indian speak", roughly translated). It was green, and about 600 or 700 pages thick (very big book). For the most part, the letters of Guarani are pronounced like in Spanish, with a few exceptions: J, for example, is pronounced as in English, and the letter Y is pronounced deeply in the throat and sort of sounds like the noise you make when something is really disgusting. Maybe someday I'll do a YouTube video of Guarani pronunciations if it hasn't been done already. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

On the off chance that they would have it, I took at look at casadellibro.com. It really is slim pickings for printed Guarani material. Another online bookseller that I often use is bol.it. I found this vocabulary book there. Maybe it's of use. R. == 1 person has voted this message useful |
