Hello I am Desertbandit , and I have challenged myself to learn 3 out of the 5 (claimed
to be ) hardest languages .
That is Japanese ,Manderine and ARabic.
A bit of Background info:
Arabic
Technicially speaking I am already Intermediate in Arabic but that is because at home I
mainly speak Arabic and I can already read all the letters and simple texts but there
is allot of room for improvement I sometimes still feel like im lacking more specific
vocabulary in conversation , and I believe reading should be done faster and more
fluent. On top of that this language will always be important to me since I am a Muslim
and I want to keep close ties to my roots even when I live in a totally different
country. My ambition: Full fledged fluency equal to a native .
For Japanese: in the past half year with allot of pain and struggle and
cluelessness I could form some kind of fundemental basic in Japanese , It was my first
language I tried to learn on my own and I did not knew how to do that exactly. Allot of
my time was spent researching how to actually learn Japanese and narrowing down what
resourches I should use .
I wanted to learn this language because I admire the Japanese nation, in 50 years they
went from poor to one of the world's richest countries and biggest economy . Being from
Iraq a nation that is in a smilliar situation now I want to learn from the Japanese to
maybe help my home country some how.
Also their pop culture is pretty kickass.
Ambition : Being able to understand all Japanese and being able to hold upper
intermediate conversations.
Manderin: Haven't really started with this one yet but there are allot of
Chinese Immigrants here , and Manderin is a very usefull language so why..not?
Ambidtions : Basic Converstaion level.
Arabic learning plan
For Arabic im doing sentences in Anki ( a pre made deck) to get my MSA up and going, it
should also expand my vocabulary I hope. My method is read the sentence with correct
pronounciation and then...define every word think and then translate..
To keep the Iraqi dialect still active I talk to my family ofcourse and my Iraqi
friends.
I also have ''Le petit prince'' in Arabic...I also plan on reading it some day -_- I
wish there was more reading material in Arabic here .
Call me crazy call me foolish but I believe cartoons are the best sourches to learn a
language from I learned so many English through cartoons when I was little and I still
trust that this still works . I have sattelite tv that receives Arabic Channels but
forget that , I found this great website http://www.cartoonarabi.com/ IT HAS LIKE EVERY
ARABIC DUBBED CARTOON EVER.
JApanese learning plan :
After allot of struggling and thinking I finally made up some kind of learning plan.
I am currently on lesson 67 of Assimil Japanese with ease I plan to keep doing Assimil
everyday till the end. I do not however put the sentences in flashcards or something, I
just review the lessons allot by listening to it over and over I find that more
enjoyable and I feel I am really learning something .
Afterwards I plan to use ''an Introduction to intermediate Japanese'' Which is kind of
like assimil but more in tradiditional textboox style and after THAT I plan to begin
using ''breaking into Japanese Litrature'' and AFTER that I hope to use the book ''Read
real Japanese'' .
I know how to read Hiragana and a bit of Katakana (XD I kind of ignored this one so far
to be honest) and I know like 150 Kanji so far .
So to process my Kanji I use kanjidamage.
Its like Heisgh's remember the kanji...but funny and better in my opinion I try to do
30 a day from now on .
I try to read a few news articles in Japanese with furigana injection addon I have on
Firefix and put interesting vocabulary in Anki . Next to that I just watch and listen
to stuff in Japanese kind of like how I do with Arabic.
Vocabulary
For Japanese and Arabic I found out about this interesting and fun way to learn
Vocabulary.
You go that picture site called http://www.flickr.com/ and you browse random pictures,
then you pick one you like and you start looking for all the things you can see in
that picture... you write those down and then you look them up in your target language
and add them to your Flashcards. 2 reasons this should work 1 You associate it with
pictures and 2 Its more fun than boring textbook lists .
Manderin
No sure how to do that yet...but I think Ill take it slow and start with listening to
Chinesepod and maybe do ''teach yourself Manderin'' or ''or Colloquial Chinese'' im
not so sure. Manderin is on Low priority anyways I have a busy scedule so I try okeep
Manderin a minimal for now..untill I reach a certain level in Arabic or Japanese.
Talking about a busy Scedule I go to College full time and travel 2.5 hours a day total
.
This traveling time is excellent for language learning or School work, either way how I
do it both actions free time for each other once I get home
I try to devote 2 hours a day to language learning .
OH yeah : I do not really study Grammar..I find that boring ...and not really helping
me yet at all..I try to do it on the natural way for now..
So yeah wish me luck and I am always open for suggestion and advice so feel free to do
so if you want.

@zenmonkey : Haha, yeah I know it , and as you might see I have taken a few ideas from Khatzumoto but Im not totally taking over his method , there are some things I do not agree with him.
And thank you for wishing me luck , oh and I also see that you are studying similiar languages good luck to you to .
Anyways Saturday is coming to an end so time for a report on how it went today.
Arabic:
I just watched an episode of ''هايدي'' or ''Alps no Shōjo Heidi '' in Arabic.
For a Show originally made for little girls I find this show pretty damn manly. I am already hooked to this show and will probaly follow it till the end .
Watching Heidi made me feel good I understood it 98.5 precent maybe my Arabic is not so doomed after all . Other than that I noted some new Vocabulary in Anki and did like 36 sentences today.
Japanese :
I did the essentials , I did lesson 68 in assimil its getting really complex now but thats how I like it I also reviewed my Kanji I hope Ill do some new kanji tommorrow .
Unfortunatly thats all I did for Japanese today I hope Ill get to do more for Japanese tomorrow . I also decided that I might pick up some manga .
For Manderin:
I think Ill listen to Chinesepod before going to bed maybe
Funny that even on a free saturday you can be short on time .

Okay, I can't help myself: There's no 'e' in "Mandarin".
You should get some nice vocab overlap between Japanese and Mandarin, and MSA should be very closely related to
your mother tongue, so I think this is definitely doable, though it'll take some time. This is not to downplay the
impressiveness of your undertaking, of course. With good abilities in those three languages you'll be the envy of
polyglots everywhere!
Out of curiosity: what are the other two "hardest languages"?

Oh God ..haha I am so Sorry yeah its Mandarin not Manderin, I think I confused it with the Dutch word for Mandarin ''Manderijn'' .
Anyways These are not my own words and I do not really believe them but according to Wikipedia the other 2 most difficult languages is Korean and Cantonese
Quote:
For native English speakers
Diplomats and defense language training provides some interesting data, although it covers only a limited selection of major national languages:
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the US Department of State has compiled approximate learning expectations for a number of languages. Of the 63 languages analyzed, the five most difficult languages to reach proficiency in speaking and proficiency in reading (for native English speakers who already know other languages), requiring 88 weeks, are "Arabic, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean". The Foreign Service Institute notes that Japanese is typically more difficult to learn than other languages in this group.[5]

And I see that you speak Mandarin and Cantonese Impressive man .
edit:
I forgot to say I somehow like this song I randomly found when typing ''まつり'' '"Matsuri'' in youtube. Its a word I came acrross it in a comic book . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQmxM_Ox9kY
SO MANY QUESTIONS
Why do I like this Song?
How come this very young Girl has this kind of voice?
Why does it almost sound Chinese?
WHO IS THIS PERSON EXACTLY?
HOW EPIC ARE 大漁まつり ANYWAYS?
