I've been trying to learn Spanish for about ten years now, but for the most part it was just an on-and-off kind of thing. Earlier this month I decided it's TIME to get serious, and since I have a decent understanding of basic Spanish grammar my main goal is to improve my vocab and my reading comprehension.
Books that are appropriate for my reading level are actually hard to find, so I was thrilled when I accidentally stumbled upon the Espanol series written (or maybe edited) by Margarita Gomez Palacio Munoz. The series was written for elementary school students in Mexico, and there are three different books for each grade level (lecturas, actividades, and recortable (I assume this means "listening"?)).
So ever since my discovery of this series, I've been spending a lot of time "reading" Espanol: primero grado lecturas and Espanol: segundo grado lecturas. I wrote down all the words that I wouldn't know how to define without "cheating" (there were pictures everywhere - it wasn't hard to figure out what was going on in the story), and I've come to the conclusion that I didn't know about 320 words that the average Mexican first-grader knows and about 350 words that the average Mexican second-grader knows. I'm currently in the process of memorizing most of these words, and I would later list some of the words that I still have a lot of trouble with even though I see them all the time. I will get this done before I get started with Espanol: tercero grado lecturas.
In addition to the Espanol series, I've also been reading El nino con el pijama de rayas by John Boyne. It's an easy enough book that I vaguely know what the story is all about, and after a while I even figured out how all those dialogue-related long dashes really work. My plan is to keep "reading" one easy novel in Spanish throughout the summer. Even if I wouldn't understand the story enough to enjoy it or have any sort of opinion on it, it would at least get my brain used to the Spanish language structure.
