Hey everyone,

I'd like to take a look at French and was wondering if there are any free online resources for learning it that anyone here is aware of. Just some kind of introduction to grammar and basic vocabulary so that I can take a look before purchasing anything. Also, I live in Canada and so reading material and videos in French are REALLY easy to find. So that is quite helpful.

Sorry if such a thread already exists, my brief search didn't turn up anything.

Yes there is lots of free stuff out there - I can't find it all right now because I am on sailboat on lake Ontario and my
internet service is at a snails pace but you could start with:

french.about.com

and the free Coffee Break French podcasts which are easy to find.

There is a ton of free material for French on the net. Here are a couple that I can think of:
bbc languages the BBC site even had small "placement tests" in the past, probably still does, in case you're not a true beginner

fsi courses the FSI courses are free/public-domain, FAST or HEADSTART would be good for a quick beginner's overview

wikibooks toward the bottom of the page you can download the entire book as a PDF file

also, learner.org has the French In Action videos (the textbook isn't there, but you may find it elsewhere & try YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY, usually several things to try out there
