I haven't been to Spain in a very long time but the impressions from my last visit were overwhelmingly positive. People were really nice, it was easy to get along and to "find a common language" ( in spite of not knowing Spanish ^_^ ). However, I was not in Madrid but in a small town. Maybe people in the capital are less generous and easy-going.

Spanish is a very important language in South America, and it also has relevance in Europe, although the current economic situation of Spain is rather unfortunate.

Spanish is a great language of culture. Literature, architecture, visual arts etc. It has a very rich tradition that's worth exploring.

Thanks iguanamon. I was told (by a friend) two good reasons to study Spanish, and now I'm really considering the possibility of studying it.

1. English, Portuguese, Spanish and French are the most spoken languages of the Americas. I'm going to study French with my sister at the beginning of the next year. I'm intermediate at English already, and then, being able to speak Spanish, I could go probably anywhere in the Americas.

2. Spanish girls: In Europe, they were the most friendly girls that I have met. I haven't met people from every single country though.
Latin Girls - As a friend of mine would say, "sangre caliente".

I prefer learning Spanish to listen to Shakira, I don't like Chavo del Ocho. I used to watch this, 14 years ago. But I think that this is a good reason for those who like it, like many people in Brazil.

I love El Chavo del 8 too, and would never have heard of it if I hadn't started learning
Spanish! Chespirito's other main success (El Chapulín Colorado) is also well worth a
look. Chespirito is a genius, and Ramón Valdez wasn't far behind.
