Much to my pleasant surprise, I recently discovered that wiki is the Hawaiian word for "quick" (which I imagine is the general philosophy behind wikis and Wikipedia) and that my neighbour's ukulele is also Hawaiian for "jumping flea". And it's great to see some more Polynesian already in the English language! Up until now, I think the only words I knew were "aloha", "taboo" and...ahem...the big "kahuna". ;)

So no surpises here...this has got me thinking about learning a bit of Hawaiian on the side for fun sometime. Hence I was wondering if anybody on the forum had studied Hawaiian before, or even better, could suggest some good resources to get started in this fascinating language (especially audiobooks, and novels that come in both English and Hawaiian editions for a bit of LR)?

I was thinking of studying Hawaiian at some point too hehe :o) other than aloha, the only other words I learnt were: ohana - family and mahalo - thank you (unsure of spellings) and I learnt them from Lilo and Stitch lol. Until you find some "proper" resources you can probably find Hawaiian songs online and I'm sure you'll be able to find the lyrics to them too which you could then translate using Google Translate etc. Could be fun to break it all down and see how it works etc... x

I found this YouTube channel awhile back:

http://www.youtube.com/user/LearnHawaiian

Other than that, I have no idea, except that Moses McCormick made a video about Hawaiian resources awhile back. I'd say ask the teacher at that YouTube channel or ask Moses.

@Michael K
Thanks for the YouTube link!

Ahonui's accompanying website Learn Hawaiian Online seems to be in the early stages of development (see also Living the Aloha Spirit), however it looks very promising. And it links to the College of Hawaiian Language, which offers further interesting links to Hawaiian resources:

Hawaiian Online Dictionary

Hawaiian Bible (both Old and New Testaments)

Various digitised Hawaiian newspapers published from 1834 up to 1980.

20 recorded interviews with interlinear transcripts and audio in Hawaiian.

And most impressively, a whole electronic library of books in Hawaiian, ranging from beginners to advanced, across both fiction and non-fiction. Many of these also include full audio and English translations.
