I would like to echo what Suzumiya posted. I learned Spanish in Paraguay, but live and work in Washington State, USA. I regularly converse with Mexicans, and I have spoken to people from Spain. I've come to two conclusions over the years: 1) The differences are noticeable. 2) The differences do not hinder the conversation. Knowing the differences exist is about all you need to know, in my opinion. As mentioned before, it's a good idea just to get Spanish under your belt, then you can modify how you speak it as you find a culture you would like to become a part of.

I'm from Argentina and I can tell you right now: no one should laugh about your accent, If they do, it is due to their silliness.
Choose whatever accent you like the most, after that, you can acquire the others with no problem. "Acento porteño" = portenian accent (from Buenos Aires) is used, it has various words that probably not many Spanish speakers from others countries would understand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrhCqbYcVV8 In this video, an argentinian girls imitates the accent from Spain. As today he is considered to be the best soccer player in the world. He plays for Barcelona (Spain), he went there when he was very young but never lost his argentinian accent. Nobody seems to care. Unless someone really cares about passing for a native I don't think it really matters too much. My philosophy is to try to simply minimize my English/American accent and I don't really care what type of Spanish I sound like... as long as it sounds like Spanish and not Spanglish. I do both Assimil and Latin American material and hope to simply end up as a generic sounding mixed accent.

Well that's Lionel Messi, one of the most loved footballers on the planet - but I'm not convinced that Joe or Jane Doe would get the same reaction. I say this because I've personally experienced some quite abrupt reactions from Spanish people to my Latin American pronunciation and usage - even my tutor marked me down for it last year when I took a class - and I've also noticed people from Spain AND other Latin American countries having a particular issue over Argentinian pronunciation.
