And for something a little more weighty, try Thompson's Bengali: A comprehensive Grammar.
This might sound dull, but I bought it and am very impressed with it. It IS comprehensive, all right, and it is
somewhat expensive. For anyone seriously studying Bengali, this is a major work. The organization is excellent.
The language and structure of the language are clear and the explanations are easy to access and intuitively
organized. While many grammatical terms are used, the translations make it easy to follow--assuming, of
course, that you read Bengali.
The examples show not only the grammar, but the mood, wit and charm of the Bengali language and it's
speakers. The grammatical examples are far more entertaining and vivid than most language books! I don't know
if a grammar book can be said to cover an ENTIRE language, but if anyone can, this is the one. Many little
intangible phrases that have puzzled me are here, clarified with perception and sensitivity to nuance. It is an
expensive book, but there is nothing to compare with it on the market. It is not a book for the casual visitor, but
for those who are less "serious" in approach, Thompson has written BENGALI DICTIONARY AND PHRASEBOOK,
which should you really use it in Bengal, will get you quite far on the path to speaking and understanding Bengali.
Well worth it, and a really terrific book.
