Wow, I can't believe I didn't get around to posting this yet: thank you so much Li Fei and jimbo! I used by
Christmas money to buy some readers over the break and they came in today. It will provide a nice, steady
supplement to my daily reading of 兒童故事 I find on the Internet. Having teammates to point you in the right
direction is certainly a huge benefit of TAC.
As well, I'm far to busy this week at school (two major projects that I've been slacking off on are due very soon),
so no weekly update. Juggling Mandarin and school is already proving to be a challenge; although my immersion
environment is much improved, I spend practically all of my waking hours doing homework. I've fallen behind on
my Hanzi a little (well, not really, because I was doing 50 Hanzi a day for the last few days of the Christmas
break :] ) so that needs to be remedied ASAP.
Also, the HSK looms in the future. I am yet undecided on whether or not I will take it. I probably will end up
doing it, just because I can't resist a challenge. I've downloaded both the HSK2 vocabulary deck on Anki and
looked at the vocabulary here; it's daunting, but it's also
exciting. I'm not going to commit myself yet, but I have started to learn the vocabulary list. We'll wait until
February to see how comfortable I am.

Hi Whitefish,
I hope school is going well and leaving you some time for language study. Because I'm interested in the HSK, I
looked at the site you posted above. It seems somewhat different from the HSK information I've been finding.
Take
a look here to see another, I think easier-
looking description of the HSK.
I tried to paste in a chart from that site showing the number of vocab words for each level along with the CEFR
level you can reach. According to this chart, if you take the Level 3 HSK, you need to know 600 vocabulary words
(not sure how that translates to hanzi, though). They say this equates to B1 level.
What do you think? This site is one sent me by the Confucius Institute at George Mason University, so that has to
be right, doesn't it? Yet 600 words seems a small vocabulary for B1 level . . .

Hey Li Fei. I'd suspect you're right: I just checked here for
details on registration, and the sample tests they gave don't seem very difficult. I still need to call the center this
weekend to confirm, but I'm on for writing the HSK II around the same time as you.

I agree, that does seem far too little for B1 level... I know about 700 in Persian right now, but I'd say I'm still trapped around a high A1. I would have thought that B1 would have been at least 1500 words, probably much higher.

It would be stunning if you could maintain a pace of 50 or even 25 a day.
You'll get great results over the course of a year if you can learn 10 a day, every day, no matter what. Keep at it! I hope we can all have real success this year.

On Hanzi, Immersion Environment and Pleasant Goats
So this log thing isn’t working out.
I was excited to begin a log. I thought it would a great way to share my experiences and keep my motivated.
Turns out that it’s not that easy. Time is something that I never seem to have enough of. Whenever I do have
free time, I’ve had better ways to spend it than writing a log. So this poor little log has been left in the dust and I
need to rethink exactly what I want to do with this. Do I just want to post a bare-bones weekly update? Or do I
want to post a more substantial biweekly or even monthly log? We will see.
Some good news, however: yesterday I officially completed the first half of “Reading Chinese”. I’m now onto
the section where stroke order is not given - a little daunting, but exciting none the less. On less exciting news,
my Hanzi memorization has been fairly erratic as of after the Christmas break. I was supposed to have completed
this task as long as two weeks ago. I know, awful. I had two major projects due the first two weeks of January so I
can blame it partially on that, but I’ve also been spending a lot of my free time actually taking part in Mandarin
entertainment.
That’s right. My efforts at an immersion environment are at that weird place where it’s a lot better than two
weeks ago, but not as nice as I would like it to be. I’ve got lots of Mandarin songs, taken out books from the
library and started to spend more of my time trying to decipher Mandarin articles on Wikipedia. It can be a tad
frustrating, but most of the time it’s really fun! Best of all, listening to songs or watching by favourite TV show:
喜羊羊與灰太狼
(Pleasant Goat and Very Big Wolf)! It’s a little violent, and a little sexist, but mostly it’s pretty cute. Best of
all,
it’s pretty easy to follow. I’m already on episode 20 after a few days! (It’s a bit of an addiction).
My goals for next week:
Get 7 pages into the 2nd section of “Reading Chinese”.
Start the transition from traditional characters to simplified (I already have the Anki deck set up).
Spend more time with Mandarin! This means getting my work done on time and not procrastinating so I can
spend more time doing the things I want.

More study, less blog. Just keep doing a little something on your Mandarin every day.
A short note every now and then when you've achieved one of your milestones seems like a good thing. Success stories can encourage other people who may be stuck on a tough point.

Hey Whitefish,
I like your log and hope you'll keep it up, however sporadically. Jimbo and I want to keep track of your progress.
Plus, you are taking a very different approach than I am, and it's useful to me to see how you are learning.
Thanks for the link for Pleasant Goat and Very Big Wolf. It does look cute and I can follow enough of it to make it
interesting. Now here's a dumb question: how do you go from one episode to the next? Did you link to the first
episode?
It's frustrating that I can't read well enough to navigate the web page. Any help you can offer would be great. (And
so you see, we need you here!)
