I was a little under the weather today. Totally fed up really. I've managed to turn
daily French study into a form of torture. It used to be fun. Tomorrow I'm going to
turn a new page and try to make it fun again.

Still I'm happy that I stuck with it today and got it done even though I really didn't
want to do it. I also note that I'm 1/3 the way through Pim II. Yeah, the days of being
an American business man are almost over.

Tomorrow - I'm going to re-prioritise and;
(1) get cracking on IP2, - the fact that I've been dodging it has been adding to my
stress.
(2) take a more relaxed approach to French. French may not be coming to me as quickly
as I would like but I will stick at it, and it will come eventually.

M

Marco my friend, you need a day off! Take a day off and do something else that gets you
hard! Start questioning your commitment, because commitment can be limiting...don't
lose touch with reality. Force yourself to not study French for two days, that is until
the 17th of feb, and see how good it feels when you get back into it!! I haven't done a
Pimsleur lesson for 5 days, and OMG I'm supposed to do one every day! But I've been
working my tits off and studying in other ways. But I know I'll be back on it stronger
than ever just when I'm ready.

@ mr chinnery.

Thanks! :)

- edit (I missed your first post) - I might take a break for a few days alright. But just not quite yet. I still haven't quite gotten into French enough that I'd feel safe breaking this little run of consistency. I am starting to get more exercise though and am listening to a little music.

No stress today. Today was a 'chill day'. French study isn't quite 'fun' yet, but it's heading there. I'm a little (but only a very little) annoyed I let another day slip by on IP2 though. I did some exercise today and I enjoyed it. I listened to some music while I exercised and all was well with the world!

I foresee that I'm going to have to reread the grammar book many many times before the rules and exceptions sink in. I think I'll make a quick pass of it this first time so as to get a general overview and alert myself to issues. That way I'll get more value out of my daily reading and listening too as I spot points of grammar I've read about in use. I'm already finding that I'm examining the construction of the sentences in Le Monde to try and spot what I studied in the grammar book. On second and subsequent passes I'll aim to be more comprehensive.

Day 3 of evaluating ANKI. I'm still not sure of the best way of working with it, but I'm starting to have some ideas. There's probably a happy medium between boring myself to death typing in all the new information and not typing in enough. After this week of evaluating ANKI I might suspend further data entry until after I've completed the grammar book and can prioritise the information I really want to learn well.

Marco, I'm impressed with your log -- it's full of drive and determination, and you are so open with your thoughts
and goals.
I've got to say, though, you are too tough on yourself! Give yourself more credit for what you are in the process
of accomplishing. Accept your successes more and be gentler when you don't live up to your standards. It's
okay. Life (and language learning) is a process, a journey. You are making progress on this journey -- allow
yourself to savor your progress.
I've recently started using Anki, and it's working out very well for me. I am one of those bizarre people who
really enjoy entering in the flash card info -- I could type it in all day if I had the time. (All those great words
and phrases -- I want to learn them all!) I've used Pimsleur in the past, and although it doesn't take you too far
into
the language, I think it's a great program for as far as it goes. I've done Assimil hit-or-miss, although everyone
here swears by it. I should probably try it again.
One thing about adding another language or two -- I continually struggle with not being able to give enough
time to the languages that I actively study (French, Spanish, German). I can't set any of them aside, as they're all
important to me, but it's painful to not be able to spend as much time as I'd like on any one of them, because I'm
dividing my language learning time three ways. So, you might want to think twice before adding another
language to the mix, because you seem to already be so tough on yourself when you don't spend enough time
on French or your other projects. An additional language would complicate things even more.
Marco, I want to thank you for sharing these log entries with us, and I wish you the best with your studies.

@ LtM

Thanks LtM. Not much 'drive and determination' in evidence today I'm afraid! I got a little sidetracked.

I agree with you about dividing time 3 ways on language learning, I'm still in two minds about starting on German and the Kanji and may postpone them another 50-100 days. I'll have to see where I am with French at the time. I'm still keeping the countdown clock going however as I find that I'm less distracted by the thought of them for as long as it's ticking. Before I had the clock I was thinking of them every day.. such a distraction.Weird how the (/my) mind works.

Thanks for the insights and support, maybe I too could learn to love ANKI if I felt it would work for me and if I learned how to prepare the questions correctly. Time will tell.

Okay, today was so promising but I got totally distracted. Oh well, not to worry. I just did one unit of Pimsleur and the ANKI review to keep my hand in. Must (and will) do better tomorrow.

It's strange, I don't know what's come over me the last two days but I just can't seem to bring myself to work. It's not stress or pressure, it's just apathy. It's very weird. At any rate thanks to this log I managed to finally get myself to do a unit of Pimsleur, a unit of Assimil and the ANKI review. Here's hoping that I'll snap out of it tomorrow, resume normal service on French and finally make some progress on IP2.
