Days 29 and 30 of my Odyssey brought me into...(que ominous music) The Doldrums. Day 31 sees me on my way again..... phew!
I don't know how to describe it, you know that 'thing' that some people call 'energy' others 'spirit', which when you have it even the hardest tasks are effortless and when you don't have it the easiest tasks are impossible. Well I've been wondering about it today. I've been suffering from a general malaise these last few days and I'm starting to think that it may have been caused by letting the little things pile up (ie 'I'll send that email later', 'I'll call that person tomorrow', 'I'll just take a few minutes to relax with some funny youtube videos and then I'll tidy up...' etc etc.). I think that somehow these little things pile up and drain me of all 'energy'. Anyway, in an effort to get some of that 'energy' back, and break out of the Doldrums, I started my day by doing a general tidy up of my desk, backed up PC files etc. Then I felt up to doing a general review of my projects etc and the result is that I no longer feel 'in the doldrums'.... yeah!
Made a start back into IP2 but didn't make any substantial progress. Still a start is a start.
Got back on the French wagon.
Anki: continued experiment. Today I also experimented applying it to another project of mine.

Marco's Odyssey
Weekly Review:
For week: Sunday 13th February to Saturday 20th February 2011 inclusive. Review No.: Four
Current Challenge: A hundred days of French study. (31/100)
Exercise Clarification: Conduct more specific weekly review:
Task: Review the week's French Study.
Purpose: Ascertain what went right, what went wrong, and how to do better next week.
Overarching Intent: Gain perspective, deeper understanding, and improve methods for next week.
End State: Week closed off, new week beginning with greater perspective and increased probability of successful outcome.
Weekly Review:
What were my intended results?:
* Full 7 days of French study, All 6 activities (F1-F6) each day. Trial Anki.
* Full 7 days of IP2 work, substantial progress to be made.
What were my actual results?
* French: 7/7 Days French study, Only all 6 activities on 5 days, limited French study on 2 days.
* IP2: 3/7 Days and with very little progress.
What caused my results?
* French: Low spirit/energy... 'The Doldrums' on Thursday and Friday most likely caused by my becoming irrationally optimistic about my progress on Sunday. In addition I allowed the little tasks to build up through the week and also I continuing to dodge work on IP2 and IP1.
* IP2: Failure to clarify what work was to be done (unlike French, activities haven't been clearly defined or broken down). Failure to commit to do the work. Failure to set aside a specific time to do it. Negative attitude.
* Loss of general perspective. Permitting self to engage in distracting activities before work done.(tv, internet, daydreaming etc).
What can I sustain or improve?
* French:
- Sustain: F1-F6 daily.
- Improve: Do French earlier in the evening. Set aside specific time. Less wasted time between activities. Ensure other projects do not drag French back into the Doldrums!
- Possible future improvements: Better, more targeted use of ANKI. Add that daily podcast site. Textbook with more structured learning. Compose written pieces in French to apply learned vocab and grammar.
* IP2:
- Improve: Clarify objectives, commitment and specific activities. Timetable. Daily and weekly reviews.
General Comments:
I started the week very enthusiastically. On Sunday in a fit of irrational exuberance I decided that I should sit the DELF B2 this year. On Monday, I learned that that would mean sitting the exam in June! Way too soon. On Tuesday and Wednesday my mood plummeted and on Thursday and Friday I entered the Doldrums and only did a little French because of this log. Saturday I exited the Doldrums by doing a bit of a spring clean and a general review of my projects list.
Conclusion: Beware of enthusiasm!
Accomplishments:
I wanted to trial ANKI for a week. I have trialed ANKI for a week!
In the week, I started Pimsleur II, and I completed x7 units.
I completed x6 units of Assimil
I'm still working on the French grammar book.
I've still managed to do some French every day.
I'm still here, I'm still studying French, I'm still maintaining this log.
Special goals from the past week:
Start using flashcards for vocab and grammar rules. Start small, build up. (yes)
Special goals for next week:
IP2 - Last week French was almost derailed by my failure to make progress on IP2. This is particularly galling because I flagged this danger as early as my very first post. This week I want to shore up my position. I want to put in a solid 7 days of French with all daily activities and I want a solid 7 days work on IP2 too to prevent it threatening French again.

General thoughts:
Today I got a lot more work done on IP2. Still not as much as I want or need, but I've taken another step closer. Accordingly I felt much better about French study too. Which was refreshing. One other thought, I've been so obsessed with these projects that I haven't been taking time to relax with a little music or a good book. I intend to do so tonight after this post.
Observation on French Study.
I think my learning process is missing something. In particular I feel like I'm not getting the most benefit from the grammar book. I know that I've already said that I'll have to reread it a few times in order for it to really sink in, yet I feel I could be getting more from it this first pass. I think I need a specific 'Vocab/Grammar rule learning method'. Anki is quite a useful tool. However I see it more as an aid to moving knowledge to long term memory. I think I'd do better with it if I first memorised the inputted words to short term memory. I've had some experience with memory techniques in the past, but I never tried them with languages. I think I'll have to have a little think about it. For now, I'm just going to park this thought as I just want to concentrate on getting on top of IP2 this week.

Again got more work done on IP2. So I'm happy. Also got a lot of exercise and listened to some music. I'm starting to restoring a little balance to my life.
Observation on French Study.
* I just did one Pimsleur today as I started too late. Still I don't mind as this week is mainly about getting on top of IP2. I'll be happy to just keep French ticking over each day.
* General thought about learning: I think I might benefit from reviewing what I learned in French at the end of each day and again before the next day's session. It might sharpen my attention and improve my memory.

I just let things get on top of me today. I could do a little french right now,,, but I don't think I'd get any benefit from it..... So I guess this is my first break in continuous study. I'm a little disappointed with myself now come to think of it.
Oh well, I'm just going to have a beer, watch a movie, and hope tomorrow is a damn sight better than today.
