I am un-officially joining the new 6WC starting tomorrow.

My plan is to take my good ol' friend Harry Potter and do some serious L-R with him. I am going go work with Spanish a little bit, mostly as a base for following the French and Italian versions of the first book.

I will be using Lingq and writing vocabulary down in a notebook - a separate one for each language. After dissecting a few paragraphs, I will listen to the audio until I can easily understand it.

I'm not going to set specific goals for the next six weeks (since I'm REALLY bad at that, with real life and all), but I would like to, at some point, get through the first book in each language doing this. I think after the first 3-4 chapters, it should get much easier.

I know a fair amount of French (at least passively), but the little Italian I knew years ago is very rusty, so this should be an interesting project!

I got about 5-6 pages of the French done, and about a page of the Italian. I'm using Lingq to go through all the vocabulary I don't know. I'm not "actively" learning the vocabulary, but once I've looked everything up (and written it in my notebook), I listen to the audio a number of times, until I'm comfortable understanding the audio.

Over the last two nights, I watched the (first) movie in Spanish. I'm really impressed with how much I understand, even as tired and unmotivated as I was feeling. =)

I've been playing the corresponding Spanish, French and Italian sections in the "background" while I'm doing other things in the evening, too. I've been pleasantly surprised how easy it is to pick up the Italian without actually studying it.

I've thought about adding the Portuguese (just the corresponding audio, without looking up vocab and such) to see how much I can learn by osmosis, but I might wait until I've gotten through two or three chapters of the French and at least a chapter of the Italian first. [Although, I almost wonder if adding it and reviewing with the corresponding parts in the other languages would be better.]

Good luck with your project! I really enjoyed the first Harry Potter book in Spanish. I started slowly but once I got involved in it I was reading for the story just as I would in English. I made a vocabulary and example sentence list too but the reading was the fun part.

Where is a good place to buy copies in French, Italian and German? (including audio, if possible). I have to be extremely cheap and stingy with money right now as long as I'm still living on my savings. Best of luck too with all the life changes - I just went through that myself and it's very unpleasant, but a language project is an excellent distraction.

Well, this weekend I spent a good amount of time creating a multi-lingual text with the first chapter. I put the English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese into sections of 1-3 paragraphs long. I've got the audio divided accordingly as well.

I've got all of Chapter 1 done for the multi-lingual text, and all but the Portuguese for the audio. The Portuguese audio I have is not professionally done, and I'm hoping to be able to find something a little better. I'm not sure if it's the language, or if it's the fact that the guy seems to mumble most of the time, but I had a hard time following it, even with the text.

While I was dividing the audio, I listened to the first chapter in each language. Well, not in English, but for the Spanish, French, and Italian. I had no problem following along with any of them. Not surprisingly, I had no trouble understanding the Spanish. The French I could understand as long as I was reading along. This will definitely be a test to see how much I can improve my aural skills.

Unless I can find better audio for the Portuguese, I might pass on the Portuguese for now.

Tonight, I'm going to catch each language up to the same place, and then try to work on a section or two for each day. The way I have it divided, there are 34 sections for chapter one, so I could (conceivably) finish that in a month fairly easily.
