Of course, being yourself Latvian, your opinion is way more relevant than mine. But I have been there quite often, met many Latvians of all ages and I've never found a single one who was not able to speak Russian fluently (and often a very good English. In some places like Daugavpils you can't really survive without Russian...
This is true, but how many of them use Latvian actively? Most of them, whenever they can, switch to Russian (of course I am not pointing out any anti-Russian feeling - just reporting what I saw while there). 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Does anyone know this old book:
Latviešu valodas skaņas un formas" Prof. Jānis Endzelīns LANGUAGE SOUNDS & FORMS, (J.ENDZELINS) 1938 I have an opportunity to buy it, but don't know if it's any good. Can you recommend? Thanks :) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

It could be good for deeper study of older type of Latvian. The book is issued in 1938, so it will talk about letters like "ch" and "ŗ", which are not anymore in modern Latvian. Also the vocabulary may be out dated. Endzelīns proposed to use many words that didn't become popular even in those times, for example in place of the Latvian term of "chair" which is "krēsls" he proposed to use a name "padirsenis" which can be translated in Engliish "underass" or something like that and also other names which sound vulgar in modern Latvian. 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

Yes, it may be a bit too technical for me at this stage (not even a beginner yet!) Plus a bit outdated maybe. So I'll save my cash for something else. Can anyone recommend good grammar material, with clear 1) Descriptions 2) Examples in use 3) Drills and exercises? 'Colloquial Latvian' has had mixed reviews, and although I do want interactive / audio material, I'm really looking for good grammar references and dictionary(ies). 1 person has voted this message useful |
