First: I think this thread should be in the learning techniques sub- forum. Second: Why are programs, being mentioned instead of the method? Example: FSI and DLI have two different entries, but I read in the forum are similar in method. (I have not tried DLI) It would be similar to mentioning Michel Thomas and Paul Noble or LSLC and Pimsleur separately. I have been reading this forum for few years. People have been writing about Pimsleur, FSI, Michael Thomas, Assimil, Liguaphone, Tell me more, Rosetta stone, Teach yourself, Vocabulearn, Learn in your car, Rocket Languages, FIA, Platiquemos and all the pod.coms.
I have been reading about more personal approaches like SRS methods, Shadowing, Scriptorium, Listening-Reading methods, Audiobook methods, best seller book methods, Skype methods, DVD movie methods, TV methods, alljpaneneseallthetime method, Antimoon method, Immersion methods, my chaotic method, spiral method...and endless different combinations between them. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Do you want to list only English and american methods or others as well? Probably wouldn't be much use to list czech methods of Spanish for exemple (and with all the languages around it would make a too huge list), but what about Spanish methods of Spanish and french methods of french? Some of those are very useful for self-study as well. Somewhere in the forum was information about how many natives of each language are around here, perhaps would be useful fo add methods made for speakers of those as well.

That's because "methods don't learn a foreign language, people do." :) But there is probably no one program, approach, or method that will suffice in itself to get you from zero knowledge to intermediate or advanced knowledge and ability. So the plethora of "methods" seems a good thing, as they offer a lot of variety and can cater to different learning styles or preferences. I haven't heard of half the ones you mention, such as SRS methods, Shadowing, Scriptorium, and I just started the L-R approach yesterday. I've found it helpful to combine LOTS of audio input while reading the language. Before I just did a lot of audio exposure without reading along with a corresponding text. 1 person has voted this message useful |
