I love Japanese food, and for a long time one of my language dreams has been to be able to read original Japanese
recipes and cook them without having to resort to English for anything.
Lately I think I've gotten up to a high enough level to begin trying. I know a lot of cooking words and kanji now, so I
want to give it a shot.
I know this is a fairly common goal for language learners, so I'm wondering if anyone has any experience or advice
to share? Where should I start? Ideally I'd like to get recipes off the internet, so if you know of any really good
Japanese websites with vegetarian recipes, please share! Resources for learning more cooking-related words is also
welcome.

One of my language exchange partners recommended me the following site to search for recipes:
http://www.kyounoryouri.jp/
It seems pretty comprehensive although I've never tried any of the recipes myself.

I'm happy to share Hiroyuki's Blog on Japanese Cooking, which is my absolute favorite Japanese blog. I'm not sure if he's still doing it, but there's still a wealth of info about stuff from the store, stuff from the garden, cookware, etc. The text is also my level which is why I like it. Hiroyuki has taken time/care to blog in both Eng+Japanese and there's a nice degree of humor in this writing!
For example (from Hiroyuki):
We also like to combine slimy foods together.
またネバネバした食べ物を合わせるのも日本 人は好きです。
:D
I used to write emails to Japanese pals and upload pictures. They'd send me pictures of stuff they cook and products they'd buy, and I'd send pictures taken of German products (with the labels/packaging!) It's really fun. Maybe you could find a tandem cooking partner at Lang-8 or one of the other exchange sites?

You've probably already heard of it, but if you're vegetarian you'll want to look into 精進料理(しょうじんりょうり), Japanese Buddhist cooking.
I found a couple of sites:
http://www.kongohin.or.jp/recipe.html
http://www.higan.net/shojin/
But I have no idea how good they are.

I'm a big fan of 3分クッキング: http://www.ntv.co.jp/3min/ . They have all kinds of recipes searchable by main ingredient, cooking method, and so on. The newest additions also have videos - great to see exactly how things are done. The site has some strictly veggie stuff though not boatloads... options open up if you substitute or "cheat", of course.
Another website I find invaluable is from kikkoman (the soy sauce people!): http://www.kikkoman.co.jp/homecook/basic/vege_cut/index.html . It shows all the basic veggie cuts. While some seem obvious (半月切り, half moon cut) the step by step pictures are perfect when you run into 短冊切り (short... book?... cut...?) and others that are not standard in Western cuisine.

Wow, thanks everyone! There's definitely some great stuff here for me to check out.
Neri, thanks for telling me about 精進料理 as I knew it was something I should look for but didn't actually know what
it was called in Japanese. My boyfriend was buddhist for a while and is now a Jain so there's lots of dietary
restrictions on what I can cook, for both of us.
Sunja, that penpal idea sounds great! I've been seriously considering finding a conversation partner for Skype,
maybe I should try to find someone who likes cooking and we can talk about things we've made recently.
I'm going to have a lot of fun exploring all these sites this week, thank you!
