I'm curious what makes Korean so difficult. Is it the distance between it and the Indo-European languages? Are there a high amount of irregularities in the paradigms? Is it the sound system? A particular aspect of the grammar (I've read verbs are particularly tricky)? Surely it's some mix of these factors, but which predominates?

Well ScottScheule, for a native English speaker, the pronunciation is very challenging,
the grammar is very different and quite complex(each verb can be conjugated hundreds of ways), and the vocabulary is also difficult. The writing system is actually the easiest part of learning Korean. However, if you really want to obtain a deep understanding of Korean you should probably learn Hanja, which are the Chinese characters. Korean is similar to Japanese but is more complex grammatically, lexically, and phonetically. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |
