No time to learn or review anything in January. Anki greeted me with over 2000 reviews
of my Japanese deck. I think this is a good opportunity to ditch it and start a new deck from scratch with words I care about and see 'in the wild' which will be more sustainable. The only thing I liked about core 6000 is that I always had something to study at hand. Adding new cards is fun but time consuming. I bought The Hobbit in Japanese and had fun comparing it with my book in English. It's a shame that there's no audio for it. Sometimes I have the impression of swimming in kana though, I'd prefer a book with more kanji and furigana instead of just kana. In a few days I'll have larger chunks of time to spare and I'll try LRing Harry Potter once again. It's annoying that after 15 hours of LRing HP in Italian I can listen to another book in the series and understand it without too much difficulty, whereas in Japanese I get a chunk of several sentences, then 15 seconds of nothing or just a couple of words per sentence. It's time to focus more on listening comprehension and not just reading individual words. Question: Are small kana 'tsu', 'ya' etc normally not used in vertical writing? I now know for sure that I'm going to go on Erasmus to Madrid in 6 months :) Just
wanted to share it with you. Do you have any tips for me, fellow current or past Erasmus students? :) ----- The rest will be mostly about my struggles with Japanese, feel free to skip it: I'm progressing a little bit in Japanese, mostly by filling the dead time during the day. At home I feel guilty about studying fun things instead of doing my best in medicine. The financial aspect is important as well - I'll have very limited resources in Madrid so I should really try to keep my scolarship (it's 60 euros a month). I was thinking about quitting Japanese because I felt it was slipping away, but as Arguelles had put it once, it felt like I an amputation. I decided to stop whatever I was doing at the time and find the time to do LR. I managed to put around 10 hours before school life sucked me back in its tribes. I haven't made amazing progress during that time, but it was cheering enough to see how many words I know passively, and that after a while you start to tune in and understand longer sentences on the fly. I used my 'technique' if you can call it that way - if a passage seemed like a complete mumbo jumbo I tried to at least identify one new word, highlight it, and move on. If I recognized words but didn't understand the entire sentence, I would try to identify an expression that word is used in, or a new grammar point. That second spent on highlighting that word must have some psychological effect, cause from that time on I was able to spot it everytime it was used. When I try to absorb as much of that incomprehensible passage as I can, I usually don't get anything out of it. Anyway, I decided not to drop Japanese and I dusted off my anki deck. I don't sweat it this time though - if I don't have time on a specific day, I don't do it or try to rush it. I have around 1000 expired cards but I only do around 100 reps a day during my commute. Even 10 hours of LR allowed me to immediately recognize tens of words in anki that were very hazy before, and carried almost no meaning. I'm looking forward to having some time off to put in some heavy hours. I speak French occasionally on skype and I feel comfortable in it. By forum standards it's Basic fluency - it ain't always pretty but it get's the job done. I don't really read a lot of fiction these days but when I do it's usually in French.
