I did watch Ratatouille last night in French and found it enjoyable. I think the key is to try to watch media that I'm familiar with. Having the context in place, I'm able to focus on understanding individual words and I don't get so frustrated. I'm really pushing reading comprehension over listening at this point though because I want to read all of the books I used to read in English in French. This has not been possible in Hebrew, so I'm hoping to fill this gap with French.
My goal for Hebrew is to put 30 words, phrases or sentences into my SRS per day. Whatever I'm not recognizing from ynet, that Ora Band book, or whatever. At this point, I think I need to build up my passive vocabulary to a massive level. Also, as a reward for finishing the first part of Assimil, I'm going to review the Michel Thomas Russian course. I'm holding off on my Mandarin wanderlust until the end of the year in order to spend more time on Russian. I'm on lesson 10 of my "active wave" of French with Ease. I thought doing a review would be tedious, but it's actually rather satisfying. Although I understand the meanings of the words, writing them out is helping me build up my spelling skills and figure out why certain accents go where. I'm also reading the dialogues out loud with the recordings again and it is helping to refine my pronunciation. I will definitely commit myself to continuing this exercise.
I've been keeping up with my Hebrew SRSing and inputing new data. Yesterday I SRSed Sarit Hadad lyrics and tonight I'm going to add words from Yael Naim songs. I'm really enjoying this. I haven't done anything with Russian yet. I feel a real sense of urgency to improve my Hebrew and French vocabulary just sticks for some reason and is very satisfying. One of my fears with my language learning project is that I will need to drastically cut down my study time in the near future and I will end up sucking at three languages. I'm not going to force myself to take Russian off my plate, but Hebrew needs to take top priority, followed by French since I'm still highly motivated to progress quickly. I tried to speak Russian last night with my Israeli friend's kavkazi-Israeli friend. I still don't know where Kavkaz is exactly, but I think it's somewhere in central asia.
The strange thing is that he kept complimenting my Russian, which is truly bad. I know a few phrases, but that's all. On the other hand, he was not at all impressed with my Hebrew, which is actually decent (but I need to work on it a lot still.) I guess the assumption is that I'm supposed to know Hebrew, but there is no reason why I should speak Russian. Who knows? I do hope that he sticks around though so I practice Russian more. Also this Kavkaze guy was the fifth person this month to tell me I should move to Netanya. I think that these people are on to something. Russians, French people and Israelis in one city with some Americans thrown in for good measure. and those beaches. Language-wise, I'm reviewing the Michel Thomas Advanced French course. I'm on disc 2. I am bored with it, but hoping to stick it out to the end. I'm doing Pimsleur Russian again. I started over from lesson 15 of Russian I. I'm doing my Hebrew SRS reps every day but I'm not adding new data for now because I'm starting to get a bit overwhelmed. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I am so smart. I just realized that I can control the number of new cards I review each day in anki. So that means no excuses for entering new cards because I need not get overwhelmed. I've only been using anki for one year on and off. Can you say "technologically illiterate"
Last night I went to a Vietnamese vegan restaurant and ordered take away. While waiting for my food I started watching their television. They had "supreme master TV" on, and I was impressed because it was being subitled into at least 15 languages simultanously. This is a cult I can get behind. Languages and good food. and apparently she makes jewelry and clothes too. I'm getting bored with reviewing Assimil and I'm getting even more bored with Michel Thomas. Last night I did watch "The Talented Mr. Ripley" dubbed into French, so maybe I'll just try to watch a movie a day and start "Using French". The Russian conversation I had the other day really renewed my enthusiasm for studying Russian. I'm going to do some Russian today. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I watched "the Darjeeling Limited" dubbed into French. I haven't had a lot of enthusiasm for reviewing Assimil or doing Michel Thomas. Tonight I'm going to try to skip to later in the course and review a more challenging lesson. I remember thinking the Michel Thomas Advanced Course was difficult last time I was working with it, now I think it is just tedious.

Russian: Pimsleur 1 lesson 20
French: Assimil review lesson 64 Hebrew: SRS reps, TV, Ynet A long time ago I decided to postpone Russian until I reached a higher level in Hebrew. I'm not sure if I've reached that higher level or not. All I know is that my Hebrew has improved but is not yet perfect. I don't remember how far I got with Pimsleur, but I've decided to review it again. I'm actually impressed with Pimsleur right now, because I've forgotten very little of what I learned earlier in the year. Sure, my numbers are rusty, but I figured I would have forgotten more. I'm back on the bus with my Assimil reviewing. Hebrew is going fine. The only thing I'm doing differently is reading articles on ynet and SRSing words or sentences I don't know. I'm always trying to watch more TV and listen to music, but I'm pretty sure this is frying my brain. Now I'm watching a hasidic soap opera and season 3 of haborer (ani oved sotiali me ramat aviv...yehuda levi is such a dork) 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I'm reviewing lesson 24 of Pimsleur Russian 1 I'm up to lesson 82 of my Assimil French review I watched an embarrassing number of episodes of hahatzer (hasidic soap opera) and a few episodes of the Israeli "Master Chef." Starting on January 1, I'd like to let myself dabble in another language. I've decided to do this because I want to expand my cultural horizons a bit. I feel like my scope of knowledge is very narrow right now and I'd like to try to see the world from a different viewpoint. I'm looking for a language that: 1. Has a reasonable number of native speakers in my area (CA) and on the Internet 2. produces films and TV shows that I can access over the Internet 3. There are learning materials out there that are somewhat interesting and not too academic 4. and I can travel to the place without too much fear of getting killed or jailed. 5. It would also be cool if the native speakers don't get mad at me when I try to speak to them in their language. Persian meets all of my criteria except for 4, Georgian fails 1 and 3, Armenian doesn't pass #5 (maybe it's just me), Turkish doesn't pass criterion 1...maybe Arabic? 2 persons have voted this message useful |
