I've been in kind of a bad mood lately so I haven't been studying a lot of French (except for watching FIA) or Russian. Tonight when I get home I'm going to do a Pimsleur Russian lesson. I have been keeping up on my increasingly demanding SRS reviews, so all is not lost. I have, however, been watching way too much Israeli T.V. I've watched all of the Israeli Biggest Loser episodes and I'm halfway through the first season of Betipul (In therapy.) Betipul is proving to be a very interesting and useful show for me because there are a lot of words used that don't tend to come up in conversations I usually have. There was actually an episode with Lior Ashkenazi where I didn't understand a good 10 minutes of the episode. I know that If I'm going to achieve my goals in 2011 they have to be really specific.
I've decided that I don't really care about speaking French, I'm more interestd in having passive understanding and the ability to read books. I can probably achieve that in a couple of months. For Hebrew I need to continue to do what I have been doing, except I need a reason to write more. I also would like to read more in the language. The most challenging goal I've set is to achieve basic fluency in Russian at the end of 2011. I can delegate about 2.5 hours a day to this goal, which I'm hoping is a sufficient amount of time as long as I study efficiently. I've been doing a lot of SRSing. I was hoping it wouldn't happen, but I'm kind of burned out on Russian Pimsleur. I guess I'll go back and review the Michel Thomas course and give myself a bit of a break.
Learning Hebrew has become something automatic that I don't need to gather up motivation to pursue (except for reading books, which still fatigue me after awhile.) On the other hand, If I don't constantly remind myself that I intend to become fluent in Russian at the end of next year, I can go days without doing anything in the language. I don't have a lot of motivation for learning French right now, but I'm hoping that receiving Using French will get me back onto a schedule. For now I'm not going to worry much about French, except for keeping up with SRS reps. Maybe my major TAC goal for 2011 will be to just do something in Russian each day. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

Thanks. I actually still see myself as a beginner in French. More like an advanced beginner. My main goal with French is to be able to read books with relative ease (reading fluency in French or German are required for Graduate school) and I'd also like to be able to watch French films without subtitles. I just got "Using French" (the second Assimil course) so I think I'll be able to achieve both reading fluency and listening fluency after finishing that book (but maybe it's wishful thinking)

I am annoyed due to my lack of technical skills at the moment. What I am trying to do right now is take phrases from "Le Nouveau Russe sans peine" and "Le Hébreu sans peine" and enter them into anki. The Assimil courses I have are pdf files and the Hebrew course won't let me copy and paste any information at all even though it says its allowed under the document's security settings. The Russian course will copy and paste but the Russian text pastes into anki as gibberish, yet the French text works.
I guess I will have to enter the information manually, and I imagine there is some benefit to doing so, but I'm lazy. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |

I was asking you 'coz Assimil claims that you can reach B2 after "with ease"'s courses , maybe I'll try Hugo French in three months ( which I think I'll finish it at 6 months :D )then Assimil french
thank you nogoodnik Bonne chance to you in Russian in the next year :) , and if you can reach to Hugo Russian in three months , it'll be great , because the book equal The New Penguin Russian Course but with audio ( I tried it for 2 or 3 chapters in the previous summer and it was great ) I'll be in TAC with 4 languages but the main focus in English & French , I want to study Hebrew but Greek is high priority in this time Edited by rob4languages on 17 December 2010 at 10:47pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I think it is possible to achieve a higher level than I did with Assimil French with Ease. For example, writing out the dialogues and maybe making a third pass through the course may help. I also didn't translate the English text to French during the active wave. I still was quite satisfied with the course and it was a really enjoyable experience to learn basic French this way.
