O.K. so the plan for the rest of February is to finish Pimsleur Russian (currently on lesson 24 on level 1) and Spanish (on lesson 2 in level 2). I am also going to order Assimil Spanish and get started on that after I finish Pimsleur.
Hebrew: the plan is to watch one film every day, preferably while working out. Also listening to my audio book with corresponding text. Biblical Hebrew: I will start getting 'serious' in March. note to self: still need to write that post about Hebrew music. Will do so, bli neder, next week when I come back to update. Incidentally, if you listen to the radio station Kol San Diego, they play all the Israeli music.

cool, thanks for the links! So I'm just popping in to give a quick update. I'm waiting for Assimil Spanish to arrive and I'm still trudging through Pimsleur Russian and Spanish. Hebrew-wise I'm watching movies and TV shows like a madwoman and reviewing vocabulary. I'm really getting into the show Srugim, which chronicles the lives of Modern Orthodox Jewish singles in Jerusalem. I also took a field trip to Los Angeles with an Israeli friend and we went to the Israeli bookstore and many of the restaurants over there. Unlike New York, the Israelis seem to default English instead of addressing everyone in Hebrew. This means that I have to stop being shy about speaking Hebrew if I want to practice with strangers. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

My motivation for learning Spanish is at an all-time low and I can't quite figure out why. I love Spanish authors, there are myriad opportunities to gain exposure, it will be painless to construct an immersion environment when I decide to, there are tons of opportunities to connect with cool people and awesome vacation spots...so why don't I have a lot of motivation to learn Spanish right now?
So I've decided to take the path of least resistance and focus on Hebrew and finishing Russian Pimsleur. The month of March is dedicated to obtaining basic fluency in Biblical Hebrew. Biblical Hebrew is basically the same as Modern Hebrew, but easier, with antiquated vocabulary and some different grammar. I really want to learn Spanish this year, but for sanity's sake I'm going to take a couple of months off. As soon as I start regarding language-learning as work, things will get really bad. I'm also becoming more and more obsessed with Georgian, but I think it will be very difficult to find speakers here. They all seem to live in Brooklyn or Queens, two places where I also resided for quite a few years. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Isn't that the truth? You already have some very interesting language choices, including Georgian, that will require quite a bit of time so I wouldn't feel bad about postponing Spanish. Once you're excited about it, you'll start up again and making progress won't be an issue (or feel like work). 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I wouldn't worry about deferring Spanish either. You've plenty of other languages on your plate to keep TACing away at.

Thanks teammates! You guys are the best! I do really love Spanish, and will pick it up at some point this year.
I'm still waiting for my Assimil Spanish textbook to be delivered, and one of my goals is to complete it this year, as well as Pimsleur and Michel Thomas. So now for today's entry: I haven't been doing much besides watching films in Hebrew and the occasional Russian Pimsleur. I'm thinking of ordering a couple of grammar books in Hebrew and I'm trying to get one of my Israeli friends to find me a Russian course written in Hebrew. If I'm not successful in finding those materials, I'll work through that Penguin Russian course and maybe pick up a frequency dictionary. My goal for this week is to complete at minimum one Pimsleur a day, watch Israeli movies, and learn as much vocabulary and grammar as possible. 1 person has voted this message useful |
