This was actually in a linguistic course, one of those Teaching Company seminars, that was talking about the Korean consonant system. The whole course was quite interesting but the section on phonology was particularly enlightening with respects to Korean. While it's true that no consonant is pronounced in Korean exactly as it is in English, there are general phonological principles that are in operation across languages, often times working in English in ways that we're not aware of because we are conditioned by the imperfections and historical nature of our writing system. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

Had to listen to the Pimlseur's courses again, didn't feel that I obtained mastery of 'about 80% of the material', as the announcer says. Also reread the first sentence of the second paragraph of Harry Potter 1. All in all a review day.

KOREAN - 1.5 hours
Transcribed a bit of the movie, Operation Makeover, and then watched some of the rest with English Subtitles turned on. I think this movie has the distinction of being the only chick flick involving time travel, that and apparently being voted worst Korean film of 2007. To be honest, I kind of liked it. If I was more more familiar with Korean movies and the language perhaps it would seem more clichéd but I found the characters quirky, and the plot twists, involving the aforementioned time travel and the complications it creates, ingenious in a Dr Who sort of way. Θα μπορούσες να γράψεις κάτι στα ελληνικά; Θα ήταν πολύ ωραία να ξέρουμε πως είναι τα ελληνικά σου. Δεν είναι συνήθως να δει κάποιος που τα μελετάει σοβαρά, ειδικά αν δεν είναι Έλληνας (ή είσαι;). Δεν ξέρω αν θα είχα μπορέσει να τα μάθει αν η οικογένειά μου δεν θα ήταν ελληνική.
Και τα κορεάτικα; Εγώ μελετώ την γιαπωνεζική γλώσσα, κι έχω ακούσει ότι τα κορεάτικα είναι λίγο παρόμοια, αλλά πολλοί έχουν πει ότι είναι πιο δύσκολο απ' τα γιαπωνέζικα, και μήπως και απ' τα κινέζικα. Το γράψιμο είναι ασφαλώς πιο εύκολο, αλλά η πραγματική γλώσσα είναι δυσκολότατη. Συγχαρητήρια, έχεις διαλέξει δύο δύσκολες, αλλά ενδιαφέρουσα, γλώσσες, τις οποίες λίγοι άνθρωποι μαθαίνουν. Μάλιστα. Ορίστε... Τα ελληνικά μου δεν είναι τόσο καλά. Καταλαβαίνω περισσότερα όταν διαβάζω και ακούω, βέβαια. Αλλά, ο γραψίματος μου ήταν πραγματικότητα άσχημος. Ξέρεις, είμαι λίγο τεμπέλης. Μου αρέσει ελληνικά τραγούδια, ταινίες και εκπομπές, αλλά κάπου-κάπου δεν έχω πολύ όρεξη να κάνω το διαβάσματα μου.
Μπράβο σου για τα ιαπωνικά σου. Γιατί αποφάσισες να αρχίσεις να σπουδάσεις αυτά;
Χμμμμ... Δεν ξέρω να σου πω. Δεν σπουδάζω πολύ χρόνο κορεάτικα ακόμα και δεν ξέρω καθόλου ή τα ιαπωνικά ή τα κινεζικά. Για μένα κορεατικά είναι πολύ δύσκολο, αλλά όταν είσαι ανήλικας (μήπως και λίγο ηλικιωμένος ανήλικας!) όλες οι ξένες γλώσσες είναι δύσκολο, έτσι δεν είναι;

KOREAN - 3 hours
Even though I consider myself part of original geek culture -- Apple ][ in the 80s, programmer, Dr Who, D&D, computer games, interest in foreign languages and other esoteric things, etc. -- somehow I never got into animé. While learning Korean, I thought I'd dip my toe in the water a bit and familiarize myself with the genre. While historically animé is a Japanese phenomena and most animated features and serials still continue to be produced by Japanese studios (though of course with much of the animation itself being executed in Korea), the Korean are nearly as animé-mad as the Japanese and I've managed to find quite a number of works that have both Japanese and Korean audio and subtitles. The earliest I've managed to find with Korean subtitles is Galaxy Express, so that's what I've started with. Typically when learning a language with Pimsleur's you're encouraged to not 'over do it', i.e. keep to just one new lesson a day. The thinking goes something like this: part of the learning process with Pimsleur's happens subconsciously, i.e. you brain rewires itself to learn the language; this take time and while you might feel you've mastered the vocabulary in a given Pimsleur's lesson, the vocabulary is actually a trivial aspect of Pimsleur's. Like an iceberg most of the real learning takes place out of site and if you take too many lessons, a day you're brain isn't given time to assimilate them and much of the value is lost. More concretely, Pimsleur uses repetition spacing and taking too many lessons a day scrambles the scheduling so the lessons never make it into long term memory. I think there's some truth to the above argument, but I'm a big believer in continuing when you're on a roll, and last night I was definitely in the Pimsleur groove; so I listened to a bunch of lessons, which I guess I'll have to take it upon myself to review. - Pimsleur: #11 - #15 - Vocab: 7 (+1) - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's stone: p2s2 - Korean Movie - Adieu Galaxy Express (Korean w/Eng Subs) GREEK (MAINTENANCE) - 10 min. - Reviewed vocabulary cards Edited by Nudimmud on 16 September 2010 at 7:54am 1 person has voted this message useful |
