Transcription, even with sub titles, for the first 10 minutes of Adieu Galaxy Express 999 took a huge amount of time. My Korean typing is quite slow!

Took down transcripts for the next ten minutes of Adieu Galaxy Express 999. It turns out one of the reasons my typing has been so slow is that the Korean input method I was using had a bug. On Ubuntu, some versions apparently have a defective version of the k17n input method for ibus. This causes character terminations to not be detected correctly. That is: ordinarily if you press the keys: ㄱ, ㅡ, ㄹ, ㅐ in succession, your input method will automatically determine that the Hangul characters you entered were 그래. But, using the k17n keyboard method the resulting Hangul characters produced would be garbled unless you pressed the 'right arrow' key after ㅡ and ㅐ to tell the input method when you were done with each individual character -- a big, time-consuming pain. I actually thought, embarrassingly enough, that that's simply how you had to type Korean!

Only today did I finally decide that the must be a better way and searched the Internet for the correct way to type Korean on Ubuntu, uncovering the above mentioned issue and installing the imhangul input method instead.

I noticed that you're attempting to maintain your level of Greek.

I've been thinking about this ... I think it is _much_ easier to maintain a language that you already speak fluently than one you don't. Even though you have more to maintain (larger vocabulary etc.) you will be able to integrate it into your daily routine.

For a language that you speak well it shouldn't make any difference to you whether you read a book or watch the news in that language or in your native tongue. So you would practice it while doing things you enjoy and would have done anyway. No need to set aside time to study it.

If I were you I would put Korean on hold for a while, and reach advanced level in Greek. Then switch to Korean full-time and maintain your Greek naturally (e.g. read/watch the news in Greek every day or whatever you enjoy doing - no effort). Sure you could do it the other way around but since Korean is harder, it makes more sense to get Greek out of the way first.

One of the benefits of of the language log is that it, at least occasionally, forces you to view your progress as others see it and point out shortcomings. In my case, I'm a bit embarrassed by my constant diet of foreign cartoons dubbed into Greek. While my opinion is that Lucky Luke and Sponge Bob are very high quality translations, you're still hearing translations of English, or (French in the case of Lucky Luke) into Greek, and in some cases the humour doesn't translate, or the translation are awkward for the sake of being the same length of as the original audio content. So say nothing of the fact that your are hear Greek in characters voices spoken at the rate of a foreign language.

So, even though I have an endless supply of Greek dubbed cartoons, I'm going to try and wean myself off them, thus I'm starting on the Little Prince, both the audio book and the written book. It's still foreign language literature dubbed into Greek, but it should start me moving in the right direction.

Also, I'm resuming my Harry Potter reading. Again, still children's literature, still foreign language translated into Greek. (And uneven translation quality) But, a step away from a constant diet of cartoons.

KOREAN - 1.2 hour

I've reached that phase in learning Korean where I've developed a bit of 'muscle memory'. Something I recall acquiring with Greek too, when using Pimsleurs. Rather than concentrating on how to form the constituent parts of each word as they're pronounced; it's as if I give each response a running start, but once it begins to be articulated, I kind of sit back and let the nascent language machinery take over.

This is a very enjoyable phase for learning the language because each day brings palpable progress.

OK, I decided watch a Sponge Bob cartoon -- I'm weaning myself off a constant diet of cartoons, not quitting cold turkey!
