KOREAN - 1.5 hours
- Let's Speak Korean (old) - review lessons [#9 - #19]
- Vocab 25 (+1)
GREEK (MAINTENANCE) - 0.25 Hours
- Vocab
Middle/Old English - 1 hour
So, apparently it won't be so easy to through off my rekindled interest in Middle/Old English. So, I'm adding a separate section for it. I'm expecting that this will be a passing fad, but I might as well track it while it lasts.
- Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

It's been a while since I posted, but I'm continuing to make good progress in Korean. In fact it's a ton of fun.
I spent much of last weekend figuring out how to extract subtitles from Korean DVDs and finally was able to extract English and Korean subtitles and consolidate them into a single document that I can review before, after and while I'm watching the DVD. It was a major pain, much harder than English subtitles, not the least of which because it seems there are no good, free optical character recognition packages for Korean. The Latin character oriented ones that I tried do have a capacity to learn new glyphs so you can teach them Korean characters, but they seem to get confused by the fact that certain glyphs can be full sized, half sized or even one third sized and that two glyphs can appear side by side with a 'normal characters' worth of space between them. In any case I had to give up and just treat the subtitles as images and paste them into the document.

Work and the holidays have conspired to keep me from updating my language log, but I've kept up with both Korean and Greek. I've been having coffee regularly with a Greek woman who was, oddly enough, the roommate of my Korean instructor. One of her great loves is Greek poetry, so we've been chatting about her favorite poets and poems.
For Korean, I've been attending a local, rather informal, beginners class. I had wanted to study on my own for a bit longer before trying my Korean out with other language learners or natives, but the opportunity presented itself.
GREEK (MAINTENANCE)
- Communicate in Greek 2 - Chapter 3 (review)
- Vocab
- Entire series of Oi Aparadektoi
- First and most of the second season of Sto Para Pente (some of which I have the subtitles for.)
- Several hours of Greek native conversation.
- A few chapters of O Zitianos.

I felt a bit a bit bored with the Greek book that I've been reading lately, O Zitianos, so browsed through a few others I have on my 'to read' list, including few pages from a translation of Danielle Steel's Lightning and from Penelope Delta's For the Father, (Gia ton Patrida).
Delta is a very highly esteemed children's writer from the first part of the 20th century. Though not widely known outside Greece (I don't think any of her works have been translated into English), her popular books were valued not only for their often well researched historical historical settings that wove tails of heroic exploits with themes Greek nationalism and Orthodox Christianity, but also because of the excellence of the Demotic idiom she wrote in. So, much so that her works are influential in how Demotic was standardized in its written form. Some of her works are now in the public Domain and can be found on the Internet in their Greek versions.

GREEK (MAINTENANCE) - 3 Hours
I've been watching, and rewatching, the Flintstones, (Dubbed in Greek, but of course) and I'm actually a bit surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. It's much better than I remember as a child. Considering the huge number and severity of the constraints put on the show: tiny budget, colossal number of episodes that had to be produced a season, the requirement to develop an animation style for TV that looked good in black and what and the crude color of the period, to say nothing of terrible reception that many sets received and very spotty broadcast quality -- the the animation is actually striking, clever and appealing. I particularly like the artwork hanging on the walls and home furnishings like the TV sets, toasters, lampshades, etc.
Of course the show also needed to appeal to the widest possible prime time audience of both adults and children. Fred, patterned after Jackie Gleason's character in the Honeymooners of course, is iconic. The quintessential American male, loud, boorish, self centered, yet genuinely intelligent and talented, with an endless supply of self confidence and ambition -- maudlinly sentimental, but also truly caring. The world that the show captured, especially the earlier episodes which aimed for a greater degree of allegorical realism, of 'Elk' meets, bowling leagues and local variety shows at dinner clubs was a real snapshot of how many Americans saw themselves in the newly expanding suburbs. Of course the darker side is quite apparent too, the banality of Wilma's housewife existence and the shocking absence of any minorities save for grotesque characters such as the Japanese Judo instructor. Over all an amazing experience to watch this landmark of American pop culture.
-Vocab (review 20 words)
- Flintstones 3 episodes
- Hellenic Union podcasts 2
- 'Hear to see' 2
- Communicate in Greek Book II Chapter 1
- FSI 4 Units
FRENCH - 1 Hour
Really, I shouldn't be doing French at all. But I pulled a French book from my bookshelf a few days ago and was surprised by how much I could read, it struck me that I could make perfect sense of the book, the only thing really lacking was the pronunciation of the words that sounded in my head, as it were, as I read.
- Pimsleurs 10 units (light review
- French Phonology 1.1.1
- Harry Potter 01 (SS) Chapter 2 Reading and Audio
