Don't bother with livemocha - it's crap. If I were you I would get hold of Michel Thomas
Italian. Start there and then afterwards see if you feel like using Pimsleur or Assimil
or both (amongst other things of course)

I'm just using it as a quick and easy intro to the language and to have my pronunciation evaluated. The reason I haven't gone down the Michel Thomas/ Pimsleur/ Assimil is because of the price. I'm not willing to pay that much for them, whereas live mocha is free.

well, obviously there are 'ways' to get the other courses for free/very cheaply.
Livemocha is fine for getting work evaluated but the lessons themselves are utter crap.
If you do them you really are wasting your time as they're riddled with mistakes. I know
because when I started learning Italian I stumbled across that site and for a while and
until I knew better I thought it was pretty good. You will learn more in an hour or two
of Michel Thomas than spending weeks on livemocha. Try the first hour of the Italian
course for free on the Michel Thomas site if you haven't used it before.

seriously, I am not interested in it. I know that Michel Thomas is good and all that but I am using live mocha for the beginning. I'm doing the free trial of active Italian and may do Italian 101 etc. I'm also doing other methods. Anyway, as my vocabulary grows, and my grammar improves, I'll look back and say to myself, "hang on, that phrase isn't right. It should be...". Also, how can I be wasting my time when I'm only doing a lesson a night?

Of course you are free to do as you please. I'm only trying to help you here as
someone who is learning the same language and has wasted time in the past on that crap
site. You are free to do what you like of course and I'm not interested in arguing
etc. However, following a course that is littered with mistakes is a waste of time -
no matter if you spend 5 minutes a day or 5 hours on it. Why learn something that is
wrong and later correct the errors when you could learn something in the correct manner
from the beginning?
Anyway, I have given you my advice - it's up to you how you spend your time. I'll be
interested to see if you are still following your current method in a month's time and
how far you've got.
Good luck with your studies.

Okay, thank you. In one months time, on the 28th February, I'll post a short paragraph in Italian and see
how good you can then judge my level. I will be open to suggestions by the way, but they must be cheap.
So looking back, I'll also download that free one hour and then come back and give my verdict on that.
Thanks,
James

Now, an update. My trial on Active Italian is over and so I am about to start Italian 101. I did the first one in Russian last night and it looks promising. They could split up the vocabulary on the first one though.
I need exposure to Italian so I have changed my settings on my iPod so the language is in Italian. I now get simple phrases like "Meteo"(weather), "Gioca"(play), "Controllo Posta" (checking for mail [I think]). Also, I've subscribed to loads of sites on Google Reader. I have loads of ebooks on my Sony Reader.
At this stage, I am concentrating on gaining vocabulary and getting accustomed to the language. Now, I've been very indecisive about LingQ but I am going to set up an account and limit myself on it. This way I will get basic words and verbs from the articles on there. Also, to get the most vocabulary, I am going to set my level not to beginner, but to advanced. I am not going to pay for an account nor make LingQs, but am going to write down vocabulary and then enter them into a flashcard app, so I can easily review it. I need to limit myself so when I can start to read without much help, I'll go straight onto native material.
FINAL NOTE:
If anyone does read this, can they post a link to where I can find that free hour of Michel Thomas. I said I'll give my verdict but cannot find it on the site.
