Hola Todos!
I was very busy lately and did no have much time to update my log or follow regular routine with my studies. But now I am back.
Though I didn't have time to work on my reading I still accomplished quite a bit:
-I listened to Michel Thomas basic and advance course last week (had a lot of driving time to spare:))
-finished unit 11 Platiquemos
-watched 15 hours worth of Argentinian novelas

I think I had some kind of "break through" with listening comprehension this week. I watched Univision news yesterday and it was almost like I was watching the news in English or Russian. The comprehension was effortless! Now I really need to overcome my embarrassment and work on my conversational Spanish (and grammar...).

Vanillabean, thank you for your encouragement. I stopped by your log. You are doing a great job! I am confident if you keep it up, your Spanish will improve in no time.

Regarding reading Harry Potter books.. I think it helps a lot in my studies. Reading is my favorite way to expand my vocabulary. Actually, that's how I started studying English (though I was reading "Sea Wolf" by Jack London at that time). I picked Harry Potter books because the language is simple and it's entertaining. I use Lingvo 3 on-line dictionary (Babylon will work too). It allows me to look up the translation of any unknown word by just hovering mouse over it. This is very convenient and does not kill the enjoyment of reading by stopping and looking the word up in the dictionary manually. I do write down some words (or add that word in my flash card set) that I see frequently in the text and struggle remembering otherwise.

Vanillabean, I know you are using Pimsleur course. One of the drawbacks of that course is very limited vocabulary. I really think you will benefit a lot from reading books in Spanish.

Harry Potter -55/152
Platiquemos - on unit 13
Espanol en vivo - almost finished leccion 2.. working through the remaining translation drills.
I will make an effort to spend more time on grammar this weekend (Uso de la gramatica espanola - elemental).
1-2 hours of native videos a day for listening comprehension
I spend on average 1.5-2 hours a day studying Spanish... not including watching telenovelas, news, forums in Spanish (1-2 hours a day on average)

I am curios if anyone else is using Platiquemos program. I have a feeling that I am not doing correctly "conversation stimulus" sections. Usually I am just listening to the recording, translating narratives from English into Spanish (pausing the recording as needed) and listening to the dialog for understanding (without looking at the written text unless I have to).

I also obtained some Spanish podcasts that I am going to add to my lessons.

I have decided to make few tweaks to my approach. I have read the books on Zamjatin and Umin methods of studying foreign languages and came up with the following plan for the next month:
-Daily intensive audio input (I am still going to utilize Platiquemos and Spanish novelas)-2 hours a day min (it will probably be more due to my driving times and i always have Spanish audio on in the car)
-daily intensive reading (goal - 200 pages a week minimum)
and that's it
Just listening and reading .. a lot.. at this stage

I an just going to refer to grammar books when i run into new constructions that I cannot understand.

I have completed the first Harry Potter book... moving on to HP book 2.
Platiquemos - lesson 15
