I’ve decided to start a log devoted to my dabbling in Japanese.
2011 was supposed to be the year when I would finally allow myself to give in to language wanderlust and play around with Japanese with a clear conscience; but then, as always, life got in the way and I ended up doing absolutely nothing for almost three months.
A fortnight ago—which also happened to be the first day of spring—I managed to carve out a little time for Japanese and the same thing happened the following days as well. So far I’ve logged about 14 hours of study, which is not bad at all. So now that I’m on a (mini)roll, I’d like to keep the momentum going by starting this log. I hope it will do wonders for my motivation and discipline.
As the title of the log implies, I’m learning Japanese from scratch since previous dabbling with the language has furnished me with just a handful of hiragana and some greeting expressions. I have no ambitions as far as results are concerned: I have no goal to reach, I just hope to enjoy the journey.
I’ve plenty of materials to use that I’ve accumulated over the years, but to start I will use the video course Irasshai (available online at the Georgia Public Broadcasting website) which seems a relaxed and non-threatening way to get introduced to the language.
I try to watch at least an episode a day. I’m only at lesson 7 for now, because I need to watch the videos at least 3 or 4 times to start feeling I’m actually assimilating the material. The rest of the time is mostly spent working on learning and practicing hiragana.
I’ve also borrowed a book on Japanese writing from the library:
Susanna Marino, Scrittura giapponese, Zanichelli, 2010.
This is one of the few texts available in Italian to students of Japanese. The dearth of materials in Italian is the reason why I’m going to use mainly English based materials, which seem instead to be so plentiful.

This past week I’ve continued with Irasshai (I’m now on lesson 10) and I’ve started Pimsleur. Surprisingly, I’ve been favourably impressed by the latter.
I like the Pimsleur method so far, maybe because I’m using it with a very different language from the ones I already know and the continuous repetitions of the small chunks of language and short sentences they present are sufficiently challenging to keep me concentrated and interested. I don’t know if I could stand being drilled in that way for half an hour in a more transparent language (say French or Spanish or even Dutch) to memorize something that you could probably learn anyway in less than 10 minutes. But Japanese offering no cognates nor any similarity in grammar, I find it makes this method worthwhile.
Total time studied so far: 22 hr

Ciao Emme !
Bon courage!
