That's right. It would be very difficult even for the native Chinese speakers to remember
those together vs no-together spelling rules. In addition, many Chinese people don't have
a perfect Mandarin pronunciation. So it would be a nightmare if they use Romanized Pinyin
only for written communication (especially for those people from Hongkong/Canton trying
to write Mandarin in Pinyin - or vise versa). Maybe that is why Vietnamese opt for
keeping each word separate to avoid this potential inconsistent grouping problem.
