I'm in the market for the above and I found a listing of available books from the University of Illinois German Dept.as I was caught in the Net. Does anyone have any experiences with the titles or any other recommendations on good synonym dictionaries? Obviously the most currently up to date or revised editions are most desired.
Danke im Voraus fuer alle Antworten auf die Frage!
here is the list:
432 W129 (Modern Languages Reference)
Adolphs, Ulrich, ed. Wahrig Synonymwörterbuch. Bertelsmann Lexikon Institut. Gütersloh: Wissen Media Verlag, 2008.
435 B872 2003 (Modern Languages Reference)
Bulitta, Erich und Hildegard Bulitta. Wörterbuch der Synonyme und Antonyme: Sinn- und sachverwandte Wörter und Begriffe sowie deren Gegenteil und Bedeutungsvarianten. Franfurt: Kruger, 2004.Contains both synonyms and antonyms to frequently used words. Synonyms are in the left on column on each page, and antonyms are in the right column.
433.1 D8633 1986 (Modern Languages Reference)
Drosdowski, Günther und Wolfgang Müller. Sinn- und sachverwandte Wörter: Wörterbuch der treffenden Ausdrücke. 2., neu bearbeitete erweiterte und aktualisierte Auflage. Mannheim: Duden Verlag, 1986.
(VOLUME 8 of Der Duden in 12 Bänden: Das Standardwerk zur deutschen Sprache). This synonym dictionary aids in the selection of the right word (or phrase) for use in a particular context. Because the dictionary contains many cross-references, the work is extremely useful.
433.1 R119K (Modern Languages Reference)
Radszuweit, Siegrid und Martha Spalier. Knaurs Lexikon der sinnverwandten Wörter: 20.000 Stichwörter mit ihren Synonymen. München: Knaur, 1982.
A standard dictionary of synonyms.
433 Sy77 (Modern Languages Reference)
Synonyme: Sinn- und sachverwandte Wörter. St. Gallen: Otus, 2005.

I realize you are looking for paper but check out this on-line resource if you haven't already. It's part of the canoo.net site which I find excellent:

thanks for the link. Great site. I do like to have a book handy so I'm not staring at the computer screen all the time and of course I don't always have the computer on.
thanks again.

I second the Duden 8 (Sinn- und sachverwandte Wörter) recommendation. Very useful and a nice size. That being
said, the book of synonyms and antonyms looks interesting.

I've always used the following: Grosses Wörterbuch / Deutsch Synonyme. I grabbed this while in Germany for fairly cheap, and the ISBN is as follows 978-3-8174-7483-7. I really liked this dictionary, due to the price, plus the fact that it is pretty compact, though it does contain a lot of information.
