One thing I learned from Japanese study - I really like to watch a good L2 drama with L2 subtitles for 30-60 min,
then watch it again with L1 subtitles. For me, this is a lot more pleasant than looking up words, or just being confused about the content. So I try to get dramas with L1 and L2 subtitles. These are pretty easy to find with Japanese. Thank you D-addicts. But Chinese is a different story. D-addicts has a few dramas with mandarin and English subtitles, but most are Taiwan dramas. These are a nice break sometimes, but I want my main thrust to be mainland speech. Does anybody know where I can find Mainland China dramas in mandarin with both Mandarin and English subtitles? I watch dramas in Chinese with two subtitles for the same reasons, but I use my L2
(English). For me, the best places to watch online are http://www.viki.com/ , http://www.mysoju.com/ and http://www.dramacrazy.net/ They have the Mainland dramas separated from the Taiwanese ones and the most of them have English and Chinese subtitles. I prefer viki, but sometimes there are parts that don't work there but they do in mysoju (being the source viki itself, weird). You have subtitles in different languages to choose and, at the top of the video screen, you can be reading other people's comments about the drama (you can disable that option). If you are looking to purchase DVDs and are unconcerned about imitating facial expressions, etc. take a look at Korean dramas. A good number of them are dubbed into Mandarin. These productions have some of the best accents that I've encountered in media. A number of friends from both the mainland and Taiwan rave about the dramas and also agree that the Mandarin is wonderful. Good luck!

Take a look at "The Prince of Tennis". This one immediately pops to mind as probably having general appeal. There is a mainland production of this drama with live actors, not animation, which was popular enough that they produced a sequel. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

The DVD set that I purchased, A Beautiful Daughter-in-law era, is a drama from Mainland China that looks at the changing attitudes of a middle class family. I saw several episodes on SinoVision TV (NYC), and although it has no captions in English, it is captioned in hanzi (which was the main reason why I made the purchase).
