In my Assimil studies I can across:
"hij kan er niets aan veranderen" - he can't do (change) anything about it. Can someone please tell me the difference between "veranderen" and "veranderen aan". Please also give some examples. Thanks a lot. Steven 1 person has voted this message useful | |

"Veranderen" means "to change" and "aan" is the preposition that means "about" in this context.
"Hij kan het niet veranderen" - He can't change it. "Hij kan er niets aan veranderen" Lit: He can it nothing about change. You can replace "veranderen" with "doen" and it'll work the same way: "Hij kan het niet doen" - He can't do it. "Hij kan er niets aan doen" - He can't do anything about it (but often used to mean: it's not his fault / he can't help it) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

@ReneeMona: Isn't "aan" here part of the Dutch pronominal adverb "eraan" which has been split into two parts and would be used with other verbs in exactly the same way?
E.g. Ik kan er niets aan toevoegen. (=There's nothing I can add [to it].) 1 person has voted this message useful |
