After hearing on this forum several times that telenovelas were great practice for Spanish listening/comprehension, I've decided to to try them out and see how it works. The only problem is that I have no idea where to order them from, or which ones are any good. I'm hardly a fan of soap operas in English, so you can imagine my expertise with the ones in Spanish.

So, here's how you can help me out. Could someone please tell me, one, what is a good website to order these from (Amazon?), and two, some recommendations for ones that are at least mildly interesting and contain English/Spanish subtitles.

Much appreciated y gracias de antemano.

I like Rubi. It has been a while since I have seen it, so I can't remember about the subtitles but it is pretty interesting. You can order a lot of different ones from Amazon used or new for pretty cheap!

Pedro Damián's had some good ones if you like high school settings with cute girls. Clase 406 & Rebelde are the big two. Rebelde was hugely successfully and spawned one of the world's worst yet most popular bands (RBD). His current telenovela is Lola Érase una Vez, which is kind of a cinderella story.

If you're in the US, I don't see why you would really need to buy DVDs. You should have access to at least a couple of Spanish language stations. Telenovelas are on all the time.

I've been watching a drama from Argentina by the name of "Epitafios."

It's a dark story about a serial killer who plans his victim's tombstone epitaphs before elaborately murdering them.

The story is almost unbelievable at times but the theme stands out well in a sea of typical tasteless trash telenovelas.

Message me if you want to see all of Epitafios.

Lots of smaller towns in the US, even a few close to the border, don't have access to Spanish-language over-the-air
TV channels. This lack of access could make ordering necessary.

Definitely Epitafios: You can buy it on-line. There is a second season now playing on HBO:

Anita No Te Rajes (Spanish telenovela filmed and set in the U.S.):

La reina del sur is brand new and supposed to be really good (based on a popular novel):

I have used various telenovelas for a few years now. Where I live there are at least three different Spanish networks that offer them. My question is what do you like? Action? Romance? Humor? Some are geared towards younger or older audiences. Also, some are rather racy and adult oriented while others are quite suitable for younger audiences.
Re: La Reina del Sur- there is a lot of action, but the main character is Mexican, living in exile in Spanish North Africa. The other characters react to her Mexican accent: some find it sexy, some cute, and, some see her as low class. One character who has befriended the main character has helped her in learning the "new" words. I have found this helpful as a cross referencing of the two variations in the languages. For example "chamba" is Mexican for "job" or "work" (from the verb "chambear", "to work", while the Spain characters use the verb "currar" for "to work" rather than "trabajar").
The show also has characters speaking Arabic, a little French, and, some characters who are Gallegos (Galician)and they seem to speak with a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese. Also, the Mexican characters who are thugs speak with a lot of slang and words "cut off", e.g. "pa" for "para". If you are just starting out, this may be difficult for you.
PS I also would never ever watch a "soap opera" but these shows are really novels that have stories that eventually end. They are based on novels, including famous novels (e.g. Doña Barbara), as well as some written just for the small screen.
