Does anybody know if Assimil Vietnamese is southern or northern dialect? I can't speak
or read French, but I imagine that I can have my wife translate directly from the Vietnamese. If I get the program, I will try to post the translated text on the web.

I'm a Vietnamese-American and used Pimsleur to improve my Vietnamese (my parents are immigrants), and I didn't think it was rude. It was just a little vague as to the usage of ong and ba...I would only use those words for people age 60+, or possibly they already have grandkids. Actually Vietnamese pronouns just a really complicated topic that can't really be explained by "co = a young woman". :P

A heads-up for French speakers:
Cours de Vietnamien by Asiathèque.
Equivalent to about three years of study, it contains first a dialogue, then a vocabulary list of new words followed by a grammatical analysis.
One caveat: Only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the texts are recorded. Other than that it looks like an excellent resource, especially as the texts get longer and more interesting and start dealing with topics like history and culture.

Once again I want to thank everyone for their contributions to this post, I am finding them very helpful. I hope they may be a resource for others too. I had never heard of the Asiathèque series before. A little googling and it seems to appear that its not a oft searched term, so perhaps many others have not either.
Cam on,
John Paul

DLI also produced a Vietnamese course with audio, which you can find for free download here:
http://jlu.wbtrain.com/sumtotal/language/DLI%20basic%20cours es/Vietnamese/
I know nothing about the age, quality, dialect, etc., of the materials, and suspect that the course may well date from the time of the Vietnam War (I haven't looked at it) but it does provide at least one additional resource.
