Hi everybody,
I am seriously considering moving to Istanbul to learn Turkish, and I was therefore wondering if anyone else here has had an experience of learning Turkish through any school in Istanbul/Turkey? If so what could you advise?
After researching I have found Tomer to be the most reputable course but this apparently goes at a steady pace, and also Dilmer which is also reputable (but not officially recognised by the government) and goes at a faster, more intensive pace.
I am thinking about going with Dilmer simply for the intensive and social aspect. If anyone has any advice on either of these schools or any other in Turkey then please let me know :)
Cheers!!

Thanks for your reply, but why do you think Tomer is better over Dilmer?

Beacuse as you said before it is the most reputable language course in Turkey. Also it is Ankara University's language course. My friend's also recommended TÖMER when I asked your question to them. They said It is an institution aims to teach Turkish as a second language.(Sorry for my bad English )

I am getting ready to study in Istanbul as well and I had a hard time choosing between Dilmer and Tomer as well. In the end I went with Dilmer because I will be able to complete all seven levels of language courses in the seven months I will be in Istanbul; also, like you, I liked that Dilmer offers social outings for their students. One thing you may want to consider is if you need help finding a place to live, I don't think Dilmer has a housing service but I know some of the other language programs do. Also if you have any questions any time I have contacted Dilmer they have responded to me within a couple of days and they are always helpful.
Good luck making your choice!

Hey thanks for your reply, I'm glad I'm not the only one at the moment deciding over which one to go for! The accommodation issue is a problem yeah, as Tomer offers host family accommodation and Dilmer from what I can see doesn't offer anything! Especially given the fact that Istanbul is expensive, I'll have to consider more carefully. Thanks for your response though it's helpful!

No problem! Happy to share some of what I have found out on my search. Another program I have seen mentioned on discussion boards is EFINST. I don't know if it is as well known as the other two but they do help with accommodations like Tomer does; Dilmer might help you find something if you contacted them...I am not sure someone at home is helping me with that part. Another big thing for me was the price, if I remember right Dilmer is actually the most expensive program, but I figured it probably evens out when you look at the number of classes you have to take to complete each program.
I suppose that probably doesn't help you narrow down your choices any but I suppose more choices can be a good thing :)

I am Turkish and I read all you wrote here, If I were you, I would choose TOMER. Why? Cuz
all the documents are prepared by the University. TOMER is not a commercial Language
Company. I think Dilmer is a private company. And even if you have a problem or want to
change your company, I think it is easier at TOMER. Dilmer is more commercial. And please
make sure wer they gonna replace you! The other choice you can go to IZMIR instead of
ISTANBUL. That city is close to the touristic places and big enough about your needs and
also cheaper. Other thing is that you can not find people to talk in Istanbul after June.
Cuz the weather is too hot and people are going to vocation.
If you need more help you ask me;
