On one of the Mexican telenovelas, a young woman has two men interested in her. One asks her if she loves the other man. He questions her about whether she loves "amar" or "querer' the other suitor. On most of the shows I have seen the characters rarely ,if ever, say "te amo" but use "te quiero". Can anyone explain the differences, nuances, or other shades of meaning of these two expressions? I know "te quiero" can literally mean "I want you" but I have not found it to be used in a vulgar or demeaning way that the literal English translation might imply. I thought perhaps it meant more of " I like you" but I have found that it is used by lovers, mothers to children, etc. Thanks in advance for the clarification.

Te quiero mucho = I love you a lot (as my friend, like if you were family)
Te quiero = I love you
Te amo = I love you (family or very significant other)
Te deseo = I want you
Me gustas = I like you
