I'm going to take a course in Islam next semester as part of a degree in Religious Studies. Whilst I don't have time to learn Arabic (unfortunately), I will have to learn a certain amount of technical religious terminology in Arabic, and I'd at least like to be able to pronounce it properly. I also think it would be useful to learn the Arabic writing system.

Can anyone recommend a book/website that covers these two aspect of the language (and not necessarily that much more)?

Thanks:)

I learned the alphabet from the booklet that came with the Arabic Linguapone course, which is pretty much foolproof, but there are lots of books for learning the Arabic alphabet, just pick one that appeals to you, because you simply cannot go wrong.

Stanford university also has a nice free online course with animated videos for each letter. Once you have a basic idea what the alphabet looks like, familiarize yourself with the most common transliteration systems (in particular ALA-LC and maybe ZDMG. (Check with your religious studies department to find out what their preferred system is.)

Also, in order to understand the transliteration of proper names, it couldn't hurt to familiarize yourself with the concept of Sun and moon letters so that you're no longer confused why for example the word for the river Nile is written al-Nīl, but pronounced and sometimes transliterated as an-Nīl.
