I know this is an old thread, but since it discusses a lot of the confusion over the Destinos materials without
really clearing it all up, I thought I'd summarize my findings. The Annenberg Foundation Programs (French in Action, Destinos, and Fokus Deutsch) all seem to suffer from the same problem: a lot of supplemental materials that aren't terribly well-documented. Hopefully, this summary helps a bit. THE DVDS As best I can tell, the DVDs for Destinos came in two editions. The later edition has slightly better video quality and different menus, but the content is essentially the same. Both the older and the newer versions were sold in two parts: Part I is Episodes 1-26 and Part II is Episodes 27-52. The older (circa 2002) DVDs are: Part I, Episodes 1-26 on 6 DVDs in 2 cases (3 DVDs per case): ISBN: 1-57680-650-2 Part II, Episodes 27-52: ISBN: 1-57680-657-X The newer (circa 2007) DVDs are: Part I, Episodes 1-26 on 7 DVDs in 1 case: ISBN: 1-57680-881-5 Part II, Episodes 27-52: ISBN: 1-57680-882-3 Looking around the internet, there are also "complete" sets of Destinos DVDs, with both Parts I & II at suspiciously low prices, about a fifth of the normal price. These are typically sold in one large white box with 12 DVDs. These aren't authentic Annenberg Media DVDs; they are pirated knock offs of the 2002 version DVDs burned on to DVD-R's. THE TEXTBOOKS AND THEIR CDS I know of three versions of the Destinos textbooks: the original first edition, the first edition of the alternate edition, and the second edition of the alternate edition. The textbooks are actually a bit of a disappointment. They focus primarily on the storyline content of the videos. Before you watch the video, think about what might happen, watch the video, then come back to the textbook to review what happened in the videos. The textbooks also include some cultural and geographic information about the Spanish-speaking world, which is nice. Somewhat surprisingly, they don't cover grammar or Spanish usage very much---that turns out to be the job of the workbooks (more on those below). I don't know much about the original hardcover first edition textbook, but it's easy to find used. The publisher describes this as actually the better text for self-study and distance learning. It's ISBN is 0-07002-069-8. I also don't know much about the first edition of the alternate edition textbook, other than it was designed more for classroom use than for self-learners. It's ISBN is: 0-07-067257-1. There is also the the currently in-print hardcover "second edition of the alternate edition." This is the copy I have. It is definitely geared more towards high-school and college students, including lots of prompting to write about your class schedule or describe your teacher, other students, the party you'er going to this weekend, et cetera. It also has exercises that require you to work with a partner or in a classroom situation. (I just skip those parts.) This one textbook covers all 52 episodes. When you buy it new, it comes bundled with 7 Listening Comprehension CDs. However, my experience when buying used is that the CDs are almost always not included with the book so you have to procure them separately. The ISBN of the 2nd ed of the alternate ed textbook WITH the 7 textbook CDs is: 0-07-252536-3 The ISBN of the 2nd ed of the alternate ed textbook alone is: 0-07-249708-4 The ISBN of the 7 CDs for the textbook separately is: 0-07-256256-0 Hint: the 7 CDs for the textbook are surprisingly inexpensive new, so it seems like the best value here is to buy the textbook used and pick up the CDs that probably weren't included with it separately new. (That's what I ended up doing.) WORKBOOKS & THEIR CD'S There are TWO workbooks for the textbook. The first covers Part A (Episodes 1-26) and the second covers Part B (Episodes 27-52). Each of these workbooks is designed to be used with its own listening comprehension CD packs (sold separately, of course). There are 7 CDs for the Part I workbook (not to be confused with the 7 CDs for the textbook, which are different.) There are 4 more CDs for the Part II workbook. If you're using Destinos as a "core" self-study course, don't overlook the workbooks, thinking the textbook alone will do the job. The fact is the real heavy lifting is in the workbooks. The workbooks include much more discussion about grammar and, as you'd expect, a lot more exercises. These workbooks work great for self-study because, like the textbook, they include the answers to all the exercises and the self-tests in the back. The quality of the workbooks makes up for my disappointment in the textbook itself. For the Second Edition of the Alternate Edition: ISBN of the Workbook/Study Guide I (Lessons 1-26): 0-07-249711-4 ISBN of the 7 CDs for the Part A Workbook/Study Guide (Lessons 1-26): 0-07-250438-2 ISBN of the 7 audiocassettes for the Part A Workbook/Study Guide (Lessons 1-26) with the same content as the CDs: 0-07-250440-4 ISBN of the Workbook/Study Guide II (Lessons 27-52): 0-07-249712-2 ISBN of the 4 CDs for the Part B Workbook/Study Guide (Lessons 27-52): 0-07-250439-0 ISBN of the 4 audiocassettes for the Part B Workbook/Study Guide (Lessons 27-52) with the same content as the CDs: 0-07-250441-2 I don't know much about the 1st Edition Workbooks, but I've gathered the following: ISBN of the Workbook/Study Guide I (Lessons 1-26): 0-07-002072-8 ISBN of the Workbook/Study Guide II (Lessons 27-52): 0-07-002073-6 I don't know if these earlier workbooks had CD's to accompany them or not. STUDENT VIEWER'S HANDBOOKS For those that might be considering Destinos as supplementary material and not the core of a course, there are Student Viewer's Guides to assist with watching the episodes. There are two of them, a Volume 1 for Episodes 1- 26 and a Volume 2 for Episodes 27-52. These two softcover books are essentially subsets of the content of the textbook so if you already have a textbook, these guides offer zero additional useful content for you. If you are looking for something more to supplement comprehension of the videos without diving into the full textbook/workbook course, these are for you (though you might be able to get a used textbook cheaper than these two guides separately). I believe the original handbook (1992) covers all 52 episodes; it is ISBN: 0-07-067209-1 The second edition handbook (1999) is split into two parts. Part A is the first 26 episodes and is ISBN: 0-07- 067261-X The second edition handbook Part B covers episodes 27-52 and is ISBN: 0-07-067274-1 The third edition handbook (2002) is also split into a Volume 1 (Episodes 1-26), which is ISBN: 0-07-249709-2 The third edition handbook Volume 2 covers episodes 27-52 and is ISBN: 0-07-249710-6 VIDEOSCRIPT The DVDs have subtitles, but if you're watching the episodes on the old videotapes, on TV, or on the internet, you might not have that luxury. There is a paperback printed transcript of the entire 52 episode series. I find it useful when I watch a scene and wonder, "What did he/she says, exactly?" The ISBN is 0-07-067202-4 There is apparently also a videoscript with ISBN: 0-07-250141-3. I have no idea what the difference between the two are. SOFTWARE There are some old (circa-2002) CD-ROMs for use with the 2nd edition of the alternate edition of Destinos. They are pretty low-tech by today's standards and due to the fixed-pixel size, don't work terribly well on modern LCD screens (text is very small and can't be enlarged). In general, I'd pass on these, but for reference, they are: Student CD-ROM Program Part 1 ISBN: 0-07-252537-1 Student CD-ROM Program Part 2 ISBN: 0-07-285787-0 There's an "institutional CD-ROM Program," too, which is crazy expensive, ISBN: 0-07-252538-X If you're a collector, there is a 1993 version of the Destinos software on 5.25" floppy for DOS-based PCs of the era. I don't anything about it other than it is ISBN: 0-07-833136-6. FACULTY GUIDES & INSTRUCTOR'S EDITIONS There is a softcover Faculty Guide for the 1st Edition Textbook, ISBN: 0-07-002071-X The Faculty Guide for the Second Edition of the Alternate Edition is ISBN: 0-07-250140-5 There is also an Instructor's Edition of the Second Edition of the Alternate Edition: ISBN: 0-07-249717-3 I'm not sure the instructor's editions are really necessary for self-study since the answers to nearly every exercise is in the back of the student edition of the textbook already. TESTING PROGRAMS I don't know anything about these, but there were apparently pre-made tests for the 1st Edition of the Alternate Edition and 2nd Edition of the Alternate Edition textbooks. ISBN of the 1st Edition of the Alternate Edition Testing Program: 0-07-067265-2 ISBN of the 2nd Edition of the Alternate Edition Testing Program: 0-07-249714-9 AUDIOSCRIPT There is an audioscript, presumably of the Audio CD content, but I'm not really sure. It's ISBN for the 2nd edition of the alternate edition is: 0-07-249713-0. There is more content out there, but this pretty much covers all the major (and many of the minor) pieces of Destinos.
