So is it fair to say Rosetta Stone is helpful with reading and writing? I can get hold of Spanish (Spain) I and II for free.

I've done the passive wave of Assimil and up to about lesson 22 level II of Pimsleur, When I get burn out I tend to change direction i.e from Speaking to listening or to reading. Probably not the most constructive but it's all Spanish at the end of the day!

If you want to try out Rosetta Stone but you dont have the money to buy it or you dont have a friend who owns a copy, you might want to chech your local library.

My local library has it set up to where, if you have a library card, you can use Rosetta Stone online for free. I am using the German edition and, while I must say it is improving my vocabulary (which is not very good anyway), I would not shell out the cash to buy it if it wasnt offered to me for free.

How many words can you except to learn with rosetta stone and how long does it take to complete 2 levels? I mean if that's all it teaches it's important to know that!

@justinwilliams: According to Rosetta, it seems to be a Level per year... But I've seen
testimonials form people who completed the whole course in a few weeks :)

I think that the main problems of Rosetta are that the methodology can only be used with
beginners, and thus you can't move onto more advanced levels without changing the way you
learn. Also, even Level 3 dialogs are so slow it's painful to listen to.

If anyone's interested, I recently wrote a japanese-worth-it/">Rosetta Stone Japanese review on my blog... I review the
Japanese version, but the overall reasoning and conclusion applies to other languages as
well.

A level per year??? A level in Rosetta Stone comprises only about 25-30 hours of actual instruction or activity. Spreading that out over a year would mean a user would average under 5 minutes per day with the software, or it would mean that the user tortures herself going through the same lesson again and again and again. Even all 5 levels would comprise less than 200 hours of instruction which is probably only 25-50% of what eager learners would wish to do in a year.

Yes, I know that it sounds incredible, but when you launch any of the Rosetta Stone
Japanese levels, the default course choice is "Full Year Curriculum: Extensive content
and skills covering full scholastic year" xD
