I never see anyone mention the old Berlitz Think & Talk series. I came across an older edition of Think and Talk French and found it interesting. The dialogues are fairly interesting and one practices listening, answering, as well as reading. The only down side I found is that for the most part, it's good for someone who wants to take their time learing the language as it focuses on grammar but not necessarily words one would use in normal conversation... I can't tell you how many times I need to say "No, Pierre is not typing a letter on the typewriter. Marie types a letter on the typewriter"

One the plus side the entire system, books and tapes are 100% French (or whatever target language they are in) which I think is the best way to learn a language, the whole translating part for me seems to hinder the learning process. With all the sound effects it kind of reminds me of an old radio show.

Anyway, would like to hear from anyone else who may have used it and what your thoughts were.

Hello,
I rather agree with you. The Berlitz Think and Talk series are a wonderful introduction to French, German, Italian and Spanish. I believe they grew out of the "Zero" tapes that Berlitz began to add to their comprehensive language courses in the 60s or 70s. If you've seen the Think and Talk Advanced courses, they are very like the older Berlitz Comprehensive courses. I assume that Berlitz was finding that too many people gave up language learning because the early stages prove difficult. With Think and Talk you ease into the language, and, as you say, have the advantage of learning/hearing everything in the target language. I find that using these courses really works for me as an introduction. They allow me to be able to think in the language.

There is also a Think and Talk Russian, but it wasn't produced by the Berlitz staff and has a different format. And I believe there is a Think and Talk Japanese, but I've never used it and can't comment.

I think it's a pity that these courses never got as popular as thy deserve to be. One can still find them on Amazon, but I don't know if they're still being produced.

After going through the Assimil 'German With Ease' many years ago I bought the Berlitz 'Think & Talk German Advanced' but it was too advanced for me at that time. Then my belongings were in storage in Australia for 4 years so I forgot about it for a while and when I looked at it again and worked through the program I was very impressed. By that time I had a good vocabularly and wanted to polish my grammar a little. It helped me to understand a couple of tenses that I hadn't used much and was very good for addressing people formally. In my eyes the program I own is excellent for learning High German. Where I live the people don't speak correct German but in my occupation it is good for me to speak it and once I have the program in my hands again I will work through it.

Berlitz don't produce these programs anymore and I was wondering if their current programs are similar to the 'Think & Talk' series. Nowadays I speak a little bit of Italian and I'm working on improving that and I've just begun learning French. I would like to use a program such as 'Think & Talk' series to help me with my Italian and French.
